Med School Social Lives?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You'd probably get more educated opinions if you posted this on the forums for the med students themselves.

I am far from being a med student, so I feel silly even responding to things I know nothing about...but isn't that what most of us do on SDN anyhow? 😉 My boyfriend is in fact an MS1 however, and we've had the conversation many times that med school is completely what you make it. You can pass your classes and still have time to go out each weekend. There will be people though that really want honors grades or high pass or whatever they have at their school, as well as people who take on volunteer and research things in addition to school work...So those types of people may not have as much time for social activiites. I don't think it's as much of an institution thing as it is an individual student one.

I don't know, just my two cents. 😀

i love my life. course, i got in by the skin of my teeth (you know how they say the dude who wins the olympic bronze medal is happier than the guy who wins the silver? thats kinda like my deal); our first year is easier than our second year; and im not exactly at the top of my class. but as long as you prioritize and make time to study, you can have a totally healthy social life. we went snowboarding this weekend, and tend to party/hit up the bars about every other weekend. people are just cool, at least at my school. i think part of it is going to a school relatively devoid of gunners.

u can do whatever u like in med school. Unless u are going for Honors which may require u to study 24/7. U can get High Pass or B's and still have time for other things.

I lift weights, and gonna start cardio when it gets closer to summer; I shadow doctors, and doing a research paper. So basically, u gotta do all these things, and when u start med school, u'll learn how to study where u will be learning alot more in less time cuz there's ahuge learning curve.

U will develop much better study habits and concentration so when u do study, it will be laser sharp focus so this new skill will allow u to do more things like socialize and party on weekends or weekdays. I really dont party that much cuz im engaged so, my free time is spent doing things where i wont get into any trouble. ahhaha

peace

its not as bad as i expected it be...its much much worse!!!!!+pissed+

not to get school specific but any Northwestern people here care to give comments on the social scene? a decent bar scene can't hurt those that need to take a break from studying once in a while

I don't go to Northwestern but I am from Chicago. NU's location is f-ing sick. It's right in the middle of downtown. You could say the area has a "decent" bar scene.😉

I am not a med student yet but i have found out that i don't do things outside of school my performance goes down.

Going out (eating, clubbing, bars,...), shopping, travelling, movies, concerts, theatre, reading etc are things that make my life more interesting and make it possible for me to clear my mind and stay more focused.

So i think that even when i am in med school i will keep my interests. I don't see me being able to do otherwise and keeping sane.

I go to Northwestern for undergrad and I'm not sure how much partying/etc is done by the med students, but I can at least second bones' comments. The school is in the most ideal part of chicago by far - among real awesome restaurants and stores and close to the trendy clubs/bars.

Pretty close to a lot of great stores also 😍 😍 😍

As previously stated, med school is what you make of it. Gunners don't have lives- they study every night and all weekends. There are people in my class that I have NEVER seen outside of school. Then again there is a group of about 30-40 of us who go out regularly together. I have no intention of trying for honors, as I have no intention of going into academic medicine and hence there is no need for me to go to Hopkins/Harvard for residency. If you budget your time wisely, keep up studying a few hours each day, you can still find time to enjoy. I find it much less stressful than undergrad since I'm not constantly worrying about grades and getting into med school. Then again, there is alot more material and it is more difficult.

Point is, if you don't mind making B's, med school can be a very tolerable 4 years.

dmb... where are you in school?

i totally understand where you are coming from! i think we have similar attitudes.
