I'll be M1 at EVMS in August and I just got engaged. Any ideas on possible time windows during med school for wedding/honeymoon other than the obvious summer after M1? Thanks in advance! 🙂

Good questions Enkindu... not that my significant other of five years has asked me yet. But when he does, I'd like to know how/when to plan a wedding before the craziness of residency starts... And I don't even want to think about babies...😉

How about during the winter break.....you get a decent amount of time off then too.

i'm curious about this too. what is the best time to get married? (heh, like there is a best time when you are a woman physician, hehe) oh well, i guess it will all work out in good time.

I believe that the most convenient times to get married are either during your first year summer or during your fourth year (you will have several months off during your fourth year). You can essentially get married whenever you want though, a lot of people take off a year to get married/wander around the country, and most of your 3rd yr rotations can be pushed back into the beginning of fourth year if you feel the need to get married during your third year.

If you don't have to plan the wedding all by yourself, christmas break is an okay time. You should get a week or 2 off. The only downside to that is that your first set of finals will be just before that, and that could be very stressful. Spring break might be better. The best time, of course is summer after M1.

Lots of people in my class are getting married this coming winter break, cuz it's the ONLY time during 3rd year that you can squeeze in a wedding and honeymoon. I really think the ideal time would be the summer after your first year. After Step 1 might also be a good time, if you take it early enough. Fourth year schedules at most schools are very flexible, so you could probably work it in then without too much trouble (although, if you're already engaged, you probably don't wanna wait THAT long to get married).

BTW, congratulations!

Hey Enkindu,
Congrats on your engagement! I've been with my better half for about 8 yrs now and we're getting married this July 19th before school starts. We've been engaged for about 2 yrs so we didn't want to wait that long. We're in the mist of planning the wedding and it's stressful sometimes. But the good thing is that we'll be able to squeeze in a 1 week honeymoon so I'll be completely refreshed to handle new challenges. Please P.M and we can talk more about it.

We had several students who got married this summer and had to deal with wedding stress in addition to Step 1 stress. Unless you are some sort of wicked masochist, don't schedule your wedding during the time you need to spend studying for the step.

Thanks to all for the congrats and suggestions!🙂

ktran- funny thought... you might actually see our wedding happening. My fiance and I are both UVA grads and will probably have the ceremony at the UVA chapel.
