Are certain med schools better at teaching certain disciplines/specialties than others? Or is this mostly a matter of residency?

For instance, if you're interested in orthopedics, are some schools better than others for that specialty? Or will you learn everything you need to know about it from your experiences in residency?

Not really. Medical school is well standardized. You don't learn how to be a doctor until residency. Training during PGY is highly variable and is far more important in determining how well you will learn your trade.

I would think that that's what the whole point of having a residency is for?

I also vaguely remember some statistic that 92% of all pre-med students will change their specialty during med school. So you really wouldn't want to start picking schools based on something that's likely to change by the time you graduate.

If anything, you want a med school that is going to give you the options to explore all different kinds of specialties with lots of hands-on experiences. That way you can decide for yourself what you want to do, then pick a residency that will teach it to you well.
