Does anybody know about the quality of medical schools in Canada? Are they better than the Carribbean schools?? If one would attend a school in Canada, would it difficult to get a residency in the united states?

The medical schools in Canada are excellent -- however it is next to impossible to get in unless you are a Canadian applicant or have specific ties to Canada. Don't consider them "backup," especially if you are a U.S. citizen!

For some reason I am slightly offended by this statement. Canadian schools worse than Carribbean schools??? Would you ever doubt it?? Our GPA and MCAT avgs are brutally high. For many schools in Ontario the MINIMUM MCAT cutoff is a 32 and the MINIMUM GPA cutoff is a 3.7. Many of the accepted averages are close to those of the top 10 US schools. These schools are difficult to get into for us Canadians and VERY difficult to get into if you are foreign.

Well im obviously asking because I knew nothing about the subject. I was just curious and now I now how difficult it is to get in. Thank you. Not trying to offend.

Canadian Schools are accredited by the LCME which means they are considered North American schools and the equivalent of U.S. schools.

You will have equal opportunities at U.S. residencies and you will not be considered an FMG. They are a much better option than the Caribbean and often students turn down U.S. schools to go to school in Canada.

But it is really tough to get admitted. I think McGill accepts an annual quota of American students and is your best shot.

If you are a strong applicant, eg; 30+ MCAT and 3.5+ gpa, then deffinately apply to Mcgill. Its recognized as a top school, and tuition isin Canadien dollars so really cheap. 😀

Ok, I hate to be mean, but the OP must know nothing about Canada, if he/she didn't know that it actually has good med schools and they are hard to get into. In that case, why apply to McGill? It's an English speaking school, sure, but it's in a foreign country from the OP, in a city that speaks French. You gotta have some reason for going out of your way like that, if you're going to do it at all.

Didn't you get into an osteopathic school? Are you having second thoughts about going the DO route?

yo man, im a canadian trying to get into a med school in the us cause its so freakin hard to get into one in canada. 3.7+ and 32+ are just average here, and i know a lot of people having to go to the states, or ireland.

but to the op: try mcgill, they take more us citizens than out of province canadians!
