Going to be offered the position of medical director for my ED which I will probably take. Any advice as far as director conferences, books on leadership in general, books on emergency medicine leadership and other advice is appreciated.

I've been out 7 years and have worked a ton clinically since graduating so I think this might be a welcome change. I have been working >15 shifts/month and was looking to cut back some clinically. Job is well staffed with docs and nurses, compensation is good, specialists are good. I've worked a lot of places and this is probably the best job I've had so I think it'll be a good move but wanted some advice. Thanks.

Similar situation here. I took over as president/ medical director for my SDG back in January after being out for 7 years. It sounds like you are mainly asking on advice to prepare yourself for the role. Part of that may depend on your background. I've seen some people do the ACEP director conferences and they seemed to feel they were beneficial but they were pretty pricey and time consuming IMHO. As far as books, Strauss and Mayer's Emergency Department Management is a pretty good text. I would be happy to offer up some other general advice based on my first year either on here or via PM.

First question before doing any of that stuff though, is are you sure you want the job? In most places you could make more money / work less by taking lucrative clinical work.

Thanks, yes I could make more $$$ by doing straight clinical but that is what I've been doing. I'd like to see an aspect of the other side of medicine to at least satisfy my curiosity. If I don't like it then at least I'll know.

ACEPs EDDA, mainly phase 1... a lot of the rest is to find a good mentor and learn as you go. Both Strauss and Mayer spend a good amount of time lecturing at EDDA, I haven't read the book.

The servant leader, Hardwiring excellence, and 10 things you'd do differently if Disney ran your hospital are probably worth a few pearls. (None of the books are perfect though). Lean six sigma for hospitals is probably a good start if you don't have formal lean or process training (there's no way you can avoid this part).
