What medical journals or magazines do you currently read, want to read, or will read in the future as a student doctor?

I have recently become a subsrcirbed student member of New England Journal of Medicine - just the online version. Many of the articles are a little over my head..but I still find the overall experience really good. NEJM puts Audio Summary of all of the articles in that issue. There is a corresponding text summary as well.

I am trying to read at least two articles per week from NEJM. I would highly recommend you this journal.

Thanks so much! I am trying to compile a list of highly recommended journals to pick five to subscribe to throughout the summer and medical school 🙂. I love to read, and I think reading about topics in my field would be nice, regardless of how busy I am or will be. Thanks again.

I currently regularly read (when I get the chance):
NEJM
JAMA
Annals of Emergency Medicine
Wilderness and Environmental Medicine
European Respiratory Journal
Critical Care Medicine

If you're interested in the journals and still in school, just do a pubmed search and get the articles off of sciencedirect - -many titles and most universities subscribe to it.
http://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
Then science direct at your school's library webpage if not full text online, or ILL.

As for magazines, I occasionally read scientific american, but this is written for anyone, not only those with a science background and can be pretty simplistic

currently read:

NEJM
american journal of sports medicine
arthroscopy
journal of bone and joint surgery
journal of arthroplasty
journal of pediatric orthopaedics
clinical orthopaedics and related research

and other random ones as needed.

hahaha most of these you probably won't care about since they're so specialized.

HA i used to love to read...................then came medical school. I would hold off on wasting money on those subscriptions. You have so much else to read and study for the basic sciences that free reading is precious. And you will want to read something nonmedical. Plus you really do not have use for the journals till 3rd and fourth year and the school should have several copies.

Final note: You get a free subscription to JAMA when you join the student AMA at your school. Why pay double.

NEJM, The New Physician, MedScape. Oh and Runner's World. 🙂

Future Orthpaedic surgeon? If I were to go to a orthopaedic surgeon, I would definitely choose a doc who is so passionate about his or her field that he reads all those journals..

By the way, I love your avatars! Good taste for sure!

Go to MDmaker.com It has links to articles, associations, and groups, depending on what specialty interests you.

I don't read any medical journals, but maybe I'll start to once I'm in school. I do read Nature weekly to keep abreast of cool things going on in research.

Just out of curiosty, how much do subscriptions to these kind of journals cost?

Hi BooMed

The New England Journal of Medicine (nejm.org) online subscription for students is 49.00. If you want both print and online access, its 65.00.

Not sure about others. Best wishes. Are you in Tuscaloosa by any chance?

S.

Cell (sometimes)
J. Biological Chemistry (sometimes)
Nature
Journal of Investigative Dermatology
Cancer Research
Oncogene
Highlights for Children

heh, i read all of these to keep up-to-date on current research, and it lets me learn things about anatomy and physiology that i'll learn in med school. reading all of these as well as certain books and newspapers helps me mold my writing style for future research/presentations.

I really enjoy the "100 years ago" feature in JAMA. I was reading an article recently on TB diagnosis and differentiating between "Stomach" coughs, "Esophogeal" coughes, and (among others) "Ovarian" coughs.

I usually read:
Vogue
People magazine
Bazaar
Shape (does that count as medical hournal? it is about health)

Haha I never knew about that. I wonder what I did with my JAMA pile. It might be under my dirty laundry pile. Or was it my clean laundry pile? I can never remember.
