I was just wondering if this is a rather common practice across Canada but not in the US (maybe a strictly Canadian/British phenomenon?)...A friend of mine in the States is having to repeat the entire Gross Anatomy class this summer (which he just failed), but I'm under the impression that in Canada there are at least a handful of schools that are giving their students the option of re-writing the exam if they were only a few points short of passing...any ideas? or maybe they all do?? Do they also say on your transcripts if you failed the first time? I am pretty sure they do that in the States, which understandbly wouldn't be looked upon too favourably when the match rolls around I guess..

Most US med schools (especially if on pass-fail grading) will give you a re-exam and just record a "Pass" if you pass a re-exam after failing the regular final examination.

I believe we (U of Minn) offers a re-exam (comprehensive) at the end of your next break period (Christmas or Summer, usually). If you pass you pass but it's noted in your Dean's Letter (MSPE), so residency programs will see that "red flag." If you decide not to take the re-exam or fail it, you repeat the course. If you fail 3 courses in a year you have to repeat the year.

My school has what they call a Conditional grade. This is for people who are just a couple of points away from passing and are expected to be able to bring their grade up with a short period of study and reexamination. If you get a Conditional grade, you have to take a comprehensive exam in that course at the end of the Spring semester. If you pass the exam, the grade is recorded as a Conditional/Pass on your transcript and you go on to the next year. If you fail the exam, the grade turns into a Conditional/Fail and you have to do either the summer remedial or take the entire course again.
