I've heard scribe work mentioned in various threads and was wondering how to get involved in that? I'm assuming that certain hospitals probably have scribe training programs and such. I tried doing a forum search but didnt find anything. I live in Los Angeles and would appreciate any info thanks.

The only scribe programs I have heard about are in busy ERs (probably because the docs are too busy to take the notes themselves). I would just contact the busiest ER in your city an ask if they have scribes and if so how to apply. I was interested in doing this until I found out that our hospital requires a two year commitment (but only part-time, probably less if you are doing it full-time). I've heard you learn/see a lot as a scribe though.

most hospitals contract through an agency. try EMSS, scribeMD, scribe America. These agencies have locations across the country

is medical scribe programs good for your application to med school? I got an email about it but i never followed through. I dont know much about that program

Kelli,

You should look into the online training program from TRS Institute. They have launched the industry's first online program in collaboration with ScribeAmerica, the largest provider of medical scribes to hospitals across the country. Their website is located at: www.trsinstitute.com

Good luck!

...its been five years, hopefully she's finishing up medical school or in residency at this point haha

One if my friends got accepted into Medical school and said it was a substantial talking point in his application.

Bumping old thread, but I have a question about this and rather do this than start a new one.

Can being a Scribe be used as Volunteer or Shadow hours? Reason I'm asking this is because I have a part-time job at a daycare (I want to be a Pediatrician), and will be starting research soon. The last two things I need are Clinical Volunteer and Shadowing. Scribe programs sound like a really good experience but I'm not sure how I would do this as well if it doesn't count for something else without stopping something else (like quitting my job--the Scribe program pays a bit more). Not to put myself down but I don't think I can handle school, work, volunteer, research, shadowing, scribe and later on MCATs all at the same time (*is not superwoman*).

In other words, HELP MEEEE :scared:

I used to work as an ER scribe, and I put it on my application as volunteer hours as well as shadowing hours. I felt comfortable doing it because I did the job for no pay. In my interviews, my interviewers looked on it as very favorable. One went so far as to say, "Wow, you sound like someone who has already taken Intro to Clinical Medicine."

That's awesome but... the program I found does pay. I mean, I could always look for another without pay if so necessary. But if I continue with the paid one, can I just put in shadow hrs rather than volunteer?
