That kind of sucks since I wanted to do Family Practice, but yeah. What did you guys get on this?

I had to stop at 54 out of sheer bored of seeing the same 6 questions repeated. Wonder what speciality that suggests. Hmmmm.

Haha I think if you get bored easily you should do Emergency Medicine.

I took that for fun...I think two of them actually. I already have a pretty good idea of what I want to go into, but it was interesting to see my other 'options.' Of course, I was really biased when I took it because I really wanted to get what I really want to do :)

Random other note...I was reading JAMA the other day (god, that sounds like the beginning of a bad nerd pickup line). Anyway, there was an article talking about how Family Practice was sort of dying breed, and how that wasn't necessarily a good thing...I want to say it was in one of the last two March issues, but I can't remember. But if you're interested in family practice, it was an interesting read. Heck, it was an interesting read if you're not interested in family practice.

hmmm....I wonder how accurate the test is. I got:

1 physical med & rehabilitation 44
2 med oncology 42
3 hematology 42

I don't even know what #1 is. No way I'm touching oncology. I don't want to sit and look at lab results all day.

My number #1 choice, EM, was 4th to last.

Although, I'll have to give them some credit; Pediatrics was dead last, which it is on my list. Maybe they know something I don't.

Thank god... colon and rectal surgery came in last for me

Aww, c'mon. I think it would be a blast to drive one of those enteroscopy things and zap stuff with lasers. Pew-pew!

Of the things that were listed in my top 5, Infectious Diseases is def. one of the ones that interested me.

Well they repeated questions so check your consistency. You probably shouldn't be a doctar.

If you actually spent the time to do all those questions, you probably are slated for cubicle work -- you are a drone. Start cranking out those TPA reports.

Nobody picks specialties this way, and there is no rational basis for thinking this is a particularly good way to do it. And besides, it's pretty much guaranteed that the field you want to go into when you start medicine will not be the one you apply for by 4th year anyhow -- 90% of all students will change their minds at least once.

Which is why i have begun to consider the prospects of working as a demolition expert.or porn star.

lol at the MSAT...

MSAT = MCAT + SAT

dangit, that was really really lame

wow, this test is so boring!

1 emergency med 46  yay!
2 obstetrics/gynecology 43 eww no
3 aerospace med 42 what the f is this anyway? i mean i can figure out from the name but i've never even heard of anyone having this specialty...

1 Occupational Med
2 Ob/Gyn
3 General internal med
4 Rheumatology
5 Med Oncology

Gastroenterology and Emergency Medicine were my lowest.. which is kind of funny because I always thought I might want to do that..

And what the heck is occupational med exactly??

This is far more accurate (and less boring):

I actually think it is fairly close to what I would like to do, with the notable exception of putting anaestheisa close to the bottom.

Aerospace med comes up I think if you indicate you enjoy intellectual challenge...

Generally you already have to have practiced medicine for a bit to go into an aerospace med residency, and its fairly restricted (with one exception I believe) to the military.

I actually think this is prob pretty good- #1,3,4,6, and 10 were all of my top interests and infectious disease and allergy/immunology were at 20 and 21 rounding out pretty much all of my favs at this point- guess I need to start studying harder haha

1 Pediatrics 44
2 Rheumatology 44

My last few included cardiology and some different surgery specialties. I was suprised to see that they put family medicine in the middle of my list, since that is the specialty I am most interested in right now. (Right now being before even applying to med school). Thanks for posting the survey!

Whew, I was answering everything as rapidly as possible. It's interesting that a lot of the stuff I'm interested in (neuro, surgery, rads, path) were in the top results. It looks like I'm going to have to look more into nuclear med.

I think the reason some of the questions are repeated is because it analyzes when and how your response changes to the same question.

Weird! I was always thinking Neurology or Neurosurgery and that's what the test recommended. Yay!

I actually hear that residency directors are asking for this quiz when you go in for your interviews. If you don't have their field in the top 5 I don't think they will consider you seriously. Sorry :(

I didn't know it was spelled PAEdeatrics.

Classical/brit spelling (like anaesthesia, diarrhoea, etc...; closer to the latin roots). Americans like their words shorter/simpler.

They need to add a screening tool as the first question. What is your USMLE Step I score. From there it will sift out alot of specialties right off the bat.

Emergency Medicine: 46
Radiology: 45
Neurosurgery: 44
Nuclear Med: 44

Pretty accurate.
My #1 is Emergency and I find the other 3 very interesting.

Strangely enough, the other graph showed the same.

Wow! I'm surprised how accurate the results are considering the questions asked didn't seem that illuminating.

My greatest interest IS in mental disorders: psychiatry/neurology. A close second interest is infectious disease/issues of public health, bioterrorism, etc.

I'm actually rather surprised that neurosurgery & infectious disease are so close together in my list... they seem quite different.

Funny, my mom is oncologist/hematologist. Cancer is interesting but not my thing.

Nice to see I got 4 surgical outfits in the top 10 though. ENT might be fun too, considering I've had ear problems throughout my life (cholesteatoma at age 2 =/ and lost approx 70% of hearing in left ear). I'm not digging penisology though.

That test pops up every few months. It's pretty silly; as some of you have pointed out specialties that are totally different get put right next to each other.

It's fun to take though, and definitely more accurate than that chart! :D

Ha! I got pediatrics! They should have asked if you like working with kids.

This is what I got:

That kind of sucks since I wanted to do Family Practice, but yeah. What did you guys get on this?

http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/TestStructure.cfm

did you answer 'not at all' for all the questions that said, "do you like listening to people" "do you enjoy being involved in patient's lives" "do you want total responsibility for patients and their families"??

It's hard to see how else you got family med at the absolute bottom

That's weird. My two top choices (now, before actually getting into medical school) are Neurology and Family Practice. Very different ends of the spectrum. It ranked Neurology as #1 and Family Practice as dead last. hmmm....

I'll have you know, Radiation oncology is one of the most highly coveted fields of today!!!! It is a major life style specialty with a very high pay. I'd say eww goes more to general surgery which involves a very high stress life when compared t o rad onco.
