Hey,

I'm also trying to figure out summer plans after my first year of medical school, and was wondering if any one knew of abroad programs geared towards medical students/public health students.

I'm particularly interested in India and London, but would be open to others (Cuba, South America, Scandinavia, Australia, or whatever y'all might know about).

I would prefer it to be a paid internship, but I guess those will be hard to find, so I would also be open to a volunteer opportunity (would I be able to get a loan for that?).

Thanks in advance,

I worked in the ER in Monterrey, Mexico at the University of Nuevo Leon. It was a fantastic experience.

I learned a lot of medicine, saw a lot of rare conditions, practiced my Spanish, and met a lot of interesting people - patients and fellow students.
I was allowed to be the first to see, interview and work up patients, despite having only finished my second year.

I worked all day and partied all night, never slept, and had a blast.

I did it through the European Medical student exchange, but you might be able to do it as an American.

BTW, I've also looked for summer paid interships. Pretty much all of them are in Washington or with the NIH, and none were international. Many volunteer projects actually expect YOU to pay!

Good luck,
ERIC

Hey e2k, when you worked in Monterrey, how did you work out the lodgings? Did you live in the dorms?

I went on their India and Ecuador programs. They were amazing. PM me if you want anymore info.

try www.crossculturalsolutions.com . I think there is a program in Australia working with Aborigines/indigenous peoples, and there's most probably a program in India. These aren't paid internships but rather volunteer programs where you pay.

visit the Crossroads Africa website. they have health service programs that might interest you.
