Is it possible, or even helpful, to try and set up some kind of meeting with an officer/admissions person from a school that you're interested in? I know that some schools have open houses, but do they generally consider meeting with you one on one so you can show your particular interest in THAT school?

Heya - if you are a URM you can make an appt to meet with someone in the office of minority affairs (if you're lucky you can meet with the dean of minority affairs who usually sits on the admission committee) such as the Director.
