I know that these schools recruit URM heavily. Do they also prefer students from disadvantaged backgrounds? I am not an URM but from disadvantaged background. Should I even bother applying to these schools?

Hi there,
Both Meharry and Howard have diverse medical school classes and take students from diverse backgrounds. What you need to articulate is your interest in serving an underserved population (Howard has a national charter for this) and how you will thrive in a diverse class disadvantaged or not. Both schools have a long legacy of producing physicians that work with underserved populations.

Visit the schools if you can and speak with some of the students. I am sure that you will be surprised at how diverse these schools are even though they are HBCUs (Historical Black Colleges and Universities).

Hey
Njbmd's totally right. I got in to Meharry and am neither an URM nor do I come from a disadvantaged background. In both the secondary and the interview I made my plans on working with the underserved clear, and I'm sure that's what made the difference.
