I screwed up my first year and 2 quarters into my second because I was an idiot. After realizing my idiocy I got down to business because I knew I needed to raise it to be competitive. I brought up my gpa from about a 2.6 to a 3.38 after 2 years. Its not the lowest gpa but it is definitely not impressive at all so I was wondering if I should mention why I screwed up my first year and half. I've heard that you only want to mention positive things in your statement and not explain yourself for things like low gpa... but I feel like the upward trend in my gpa was due to my drive for a dental profession. Should I mention why I did so bad my first year then?

of course. a personal statement should include your personal 'story' towards dentistry. I have a few examples on my website in my signature from previoes applicants (all accepted) that pint a similar picture. Check it out.
