I met with the D.O who is going to be writing me a letter of reccomendation today, I talked to him about some of the schools that I applied to, he asked me what areas of medicine I am interested in, and then I asked him about the COMLEX, versus USMLE. We also talked a bit of what kinds of conditions D.Os have to deal with in the workplace, and DO residencies and the intern year after med school.

He invited me for lunch on Thursday, so I want to know, what are some of the other things that I should bring up? He has a phD, so I can talk to him about that a bit, but was also thinking about talking about sports and that kind of stuff. Other then that, I really do not know what else we can talk about. please give me some suggestions.

This guy is a pathologist, so all he does is look at tissue samples all day, he even admitted, one of the farthest things from Osteopathic medicine. So, in 2ndry apps.you are asked a lot about your experience with osteopathic medicine, so I cannot really say much there. Would you reccomend finding another D.O to shadow as well??

However, I did shadow a Chiropractor once, and they use a lot of the OMM (they do not call it that). Is that something I can talk about? Please let me know what you think.

Chiropractic manipulation does not = OMM...I would not recommend that you bring it up as it would more likely come across that you don't understand Osteopathic medicine.

Ask the pathologist about the history & philosophy of Osteopathic medicine so that you can get some background there.

If you can get a decent LOR from this Dr it would still cover the "DO LOR" requirement of some schools even though this guy isn't in a big Osteopathic medicine area. He still has the educational background.

I definitely agree with this statement. I made the mistake of mentioning at one of my interviews (PCOM) that I believed manipulative medicine would be beneficial because I saw how my dad's chiropractor helped his back pain. Big mistake. If looks could kill, I would not be posting this right now 😱

And as DrMom said, all you need is a LOR from a DO...even if he doesn't practice any osteopathic principles.

Read the DO? You will get more info!
As others noted... Don't ever refer to OMM as Chiro or Physio therapist.

A letter is a letter is a letter.

You better read up before any interview. Also if you don't know something at the interview admitt it and don't BS.

I know that chiropractic manipulation does not = OMM, but in regards to DOtobe's response, how is it that much different? Please enlighten me.

Are you serious?

Yes I'm serious. I know OMM focuses on dealing with medical problems closely associated with the musculoskeletal system, and that chiropractors primarily focus on the spine instead of the whole body, yada yada yada, but overall their philosophies in regards to manipulation seems to be nearly the same. Couldn't an osteopathic physician treat someone's backpain? Don't chiropractors treat other problems besides backpain? What are the major differences? You sound smart. Enlighten me.

Maybe you could talk about recent medical related articles in your local newspaper. I did this with the DO I shadowed and he seemed impressed. Also, If you have time, another DO wouldn't hurt. Hope this helps. :luck:

Are you in an osteopathic medical school? If so, you either didn't study or fell asleep on the history lecture. Either way, enlighten yourself. You seem fairly bright as well. There is a good article (a couple of yers old) in the NEJM about the effacacy of OMM. I'm too lazy to post the link, but it's not hard to find. Also, NO there are not many other things Chiropractor's treat besides back pain.
