I read that chemical pathologists and IM can specialize in metabolic medicine. I just stumbled accross this yesterday and found it quite intriguing

My questions are:

What do you guys treat and do, typical work and patient contact?

All I hear its a relatively newer subspecialty and that they can treat any metabolic manifestations and are involved in parenteral nutrition. There's a fair amount of lab and patient contact which sounds cool.

Involved in treating diabetes, hypertension, obesity, certain heart and bone conditions and complex metabolic disorders....this is the reason why I'm confused, it seems like an "endo-nepro" and nutrition specialty, or am I getting it all wrong?

I feel that endocrinology would/are take most cases as they are better known?

Do you see further development in this field?

Thanks

Note: posted this in path forum as well, to get a perspective from both sides.

WTF is a chemical pathologist?
I'm not the best person to ask, I thought it was common knowledge. Its typically a doctor that specialized in chemical pathology.
They are usually managers of a lab where where specialist NPs, techs and medical scientists recieve blood, urine and other samples, run them in analyzers and measured etc (chem path can do the tests if they want to but usually don't ) . Tests involved are things like liver function, tumour markers, electrolytes etc. The chemical pathologist will sign off some/few of these results, consult with clinicians over the phone and conduct, order and interpret specific tests for complex cases.
There isn't any gross pathology involved.

That's basically what i know, be free to correct me.

Edit: they do renal function as well

That was sarcasm. There's no such thing as a chemical pathologist.

There is such a thing as a clinical pathologist though.

Also, just out of curiosity, are you still in high school? Or still an undergrad?

I searched for subspecialties of chem path yesterday bcos we had a chemical pathology tutorial during one of my clinical rotations. The chem path attending assigned cases, i got this one (case 7) , she gave us 15 minutes to look at this and interpret our findings before we had to explain our findings. We had to use the results to classify whether the liver condition was prehapatic(hemolysis) , hepatic(hepatocellular) , post hepatic(obstructive) or mixed.
And had to come up with a differential/diagnosis.
I commented that this is possibly an acute hepatitis or pancreatitis(no proof for pancreatitis here lol) due to alcohol toxicity(very high ggt) with underlyimg hepatocellular damage. And that i ruled out malignancy as LD was normal and no hemolysis was present.

Apparently there is some ratio you can use for alcohol toxicity.... But she said according to the results the cause could either be alcohol or usage on anti-epileptics but more likely the anti-epileptics

I'm an undergrad, I assure you there is.

Are you in the US?

Also, this forum isn't for homework help.
Its not homework help, I was just surprised that someone didn't know what a chemical pathologist was, so i just sent an example of a tut i had to prove it.
No im not US. Australia, South Africa and UK all have chem pathologists. I thought America did as well.

You thought wrong then.

If anyone can answer my question on metabolic medicine, it'll be much appreciated
