Hey Canes, I've been accepted to Univ. Nevada -Reno. They weren't my number 2 choice to begin with, but they really surprised me once I got there. They impressed me much more than any of the other schools I interviewed at. Everyone was incredibly happy to be going to school there. The facilities and libraries are brand new, the class size is only 52 students, and Idaho students basically pay in-state tuition. I'm also an alternate at the Univ. of Utah and Univ. of Washington.

To be completely honest, the biggest reason I want to go to Miami is so that I don't have to carry on a long distance relationship. My sig. other is a Mexican citizen, whose visa is only valid if he keeps working for the company that sponsored the visa. He has many opportunities to transfer to Miami with his company. ...Needless to say, marriage is not an option, so staying together means that I need to go to a school near his work.

Your experience with Univ of Nevada is similar to the one that I had at USF. I went into the USF interview knowing absolutely nothing about the school, and I left absolutely loving the school. Everyone was so nice and helpful. They seem to get along well with each other and love being there. Like yourself, UMiami means convience and staying together with family. I wish you the best in this promise. Is there any branch of the company in Nevada? I really hope it works out for you. :)

Blame, i don't think you were wearing proper interview attire, but since your interviewer was dressed similarly, you got lucky, and apparently you hit it off. well...HE hit it, i should say. is the scarring healed?

I am not jealous...the sea is loaded with women and i am letting my "line" out in an effort to hook them. Luke, thanks for that info. I was expecting a letter in 3 1/2 months. Thanks for letting me know that it is in four months. Man, UM has done a number on all of us. :mad: Are you going to partake in USF's pre-matriculation program?

Well, I just sent out the application for the pre-matriculation program, so I haven't been accepted yet. But, I heard that everyone pretty much gets in. So, if I get accepted into UM, I'll spend my summer with you, Blame. But, if I don't, I'll spend my summer with Simpleton at USF. :p One thing is for sure. I shall not be lonely. :wink:

I called UM and they gave me the same line. 1-2 weeks. Hopefully, it'll all be over soon.
 
Unless of course we are placed on the waitlist. Then, we play the waiting game all over again. Yeah. :mad:
 
If I get placed on the waitlist, I'll probably just withdraw out of frustration.

PS: When does the pre-matric program start at USF?
 
The pre-matriculation program starts on June 10 and goes till July 26. If I get on the waitlist, I'll probably withdraw too. Enough is enough. I've waited for more than 6 months. I've already forgotten the reason for wanting to go there. So, Papi, what are you planning to do if you don't get in? Are you waitlisted anywhere else?

Cane•••••I dunno what I'm gonna do if I don't get in Cane. I'm on a few other waitlists. I'll prolly just wait for the MCAT scores to come back, and then figure out where to reapply. Except this time, I'll pick a lot more safety schools. No more applying to the Stanfords and UCSF's out there, I've learned my lesson. I may get a job, but that will be hard as hell if employers know I'm applying to medical school. No one likes to hire someone that will be missing a bunch of time for interviews, and will prolly leave w/in a year. Know of any cool P/T jobs that aren't too time consuming? Oh well, this is just depressing.
 
Papi, you won't have to reapply, but if you do, don't forget to apply to Finch 'cuz I need a study buddy! :D And you KNOW you could get in there and keep me company.

When I started the application cycle, I felt that UMiami was my first choice without a doubt. I have been in love with that school forever. However, when I went to interview there, I really disliked everything about the school. The curriculum sucks, the professors aren't helpful, and the students seemed to be all in cliques(just like high school-yuck!). I realized that I haven't been in love with the school for all of these years. I have been in love with Jackson and the idea of staying close to my family. The experience that I had at USF was completely different. I loved everything about that school. The people were so nice. Their curriculum is more planned out and it looks like they have placed more thought into it. And, the students really seemed to get along. After alot of soul searching and discussing this with my family, I have decided to go to USF even if I get accepted to UM (Guys I am sorry that I am going to wait for a decision from UM, but after waiting for over 6 months, I think I am owed that much from them--I will withdraw as soon as I get a decision no matter if it is a waitlist). UM has treated me so bad that I have become disenchanted with them. So, Luke, what are you going to do if you get into UM? Did you find that UM was so much better than USF? Whatever you decide I wish you the best. If you decide to go to USF remember you've got a friend there. :wink:

Sorry to see you go. I really thought we had a shot at being classmates next year. I'm sure you'll enjoy USF though. It's funny how two people can have such differing opinions about a school. Maybe I'm just in love with the thought of being a med student at UM, but I really did like the place. The students seemed cool, and I didn't really get the cliquish vibe. But I'm sure it's there to some extent, it happens in every med school. Yes, the curriculum has problems, but the first years were guinea pigs this year.

Anyway, I guess my biggest disappointment is how deceptive everything has been at UM. They need to be much more straightforward, and stop with all these games. Don't tell people that you send alternate list letters to that the class is full, and then tell people that you interview right after that that there are still spots available. Just be straight with us, coz you expect nothing but honesty in your med students.

PS: Don't worry about not withdrawing right away. After the way they've treated you, you have a right to at least get a final decision, regardless of what it is. Best of luck at USF!

Canes, the administration and "feel" of the people at USF was MUCH MUCH MUCH better than UM. UM was what i expected it to be though. i knew coming in that the students were competitive (some backstabbers) and because of that i expected lots of other bad things. but since i expected it, i wasn't THAT turned off. i don't like how my interviewer treated me (the USF people were unbelievably kind-hearted==Dr. Ackerman even poked his head into the room late in the day before he left, to wish us a safe return home and good luck. he made us feel pretty special, even though we all knew we were only interviewing for the waitlist. that guy is the bomb, and it would be awesome to go to his school. Still, this is miami, and i have lots of friends at UM med (BIG reason). now i'm just gettting depressed about UM. I still think it's my number one choice though (maybe cuz i've been chasing them since last year when they didn't interview me and i waited and waited and waited.... we'll see what happens if i get into UM and USF. i might just wanna get OUT OF THIS FREAKIN CITY!!!

I agree that picking between UM and USF is a tough decision. It is quite easy for me to choose USF at the moment because I haven't gotten an acceptance to UM. Who knows? Maybe, I might change my mind when I have the UM acceptance in my hand. My mom says that I might be acting too rash at the moment. She feels that I might be acting on frustration. She may be right. If I get the UM acceptance, she feels that I should weigh everything out (the pros and the cons). The thing is that I am just so confused at the moment. I don't know what to do. I feel that my life is speeding ahead, and I am reluctantly following after it. I wish I could just freeze my life and calmly think it out. Any thoughts anyone? I am super stressed out. :(

On a side note, I will be attending the last lecture of my college career in 30 minutes. These four years have really flown by. I'm going to miss college, but I guess I will be moving on to better things.

I'm not going to jump in making any decisions until I get a decision from UM. Then, I'll weigh everything out and decide. So, I guess I'll continue being an active member on this thread and partake in this continued period of torture with you all. So, anyone hear from UM? When do you guys expect to hear something from them? Next week, year, millenium? :wink:

Hey All,

I just wanted to add my two cents. There's been some talk on this thread that UM has a "cutt-throat" atmosphere. I recently visited the medical campus, and talked with some students, and they seemed like a really chill group of kids. They didn't seem competitive at all...and they were good looking to boot! :wink: Like at other schools, I think UM students are competitive with themselves, but not each other. Hope that helps. hey. well i got an alternate list letter from UMiami today. Damn. It doesn't look that good. I heard from someone that the class isn't full yet, but when i asked the secretary if any acceptances were going out (along with my alternate list) and she said "not to my knowledge" but only after a long pause. it's like they know you're gonna say pathetic ****, so they give you your space, let you talk and ask dumb questions, and Then they answer calmly. pretty funny, i noticed it with another school too....

anyway, something tells me they still are sending out acceptances. especially since i was never deferred. this is the first corresspondence i got from UM. they may have given the deferred students a good look-through, and might accept some from there. who knows..but you guys have really good applications--how could there NOT be more acceptances coming out??!!

so that might still be happening. Hey IDA, was the alternate list the first corresspondence you got from UM, or did they deferr you first??? cuz maybe it's a good thing (although i doubt it when i compare my sorry app with you guys's).

when i asked the secretary how good my chances were of getting in she said she had no idea, that it depends on how the waitlist moves (no ****!). i was trying to ask how it moved last year, but she wasn't understanding me, i guess. but she did mention that although it's ranked, the only ones that know the rankings are the people on the committee. still, she could have told me how many got off the list last year. i don't think many.

can someone help make sense out of this?

Who told you that the class was not full yet, and how does that person know this? I haven't gotten anything in the mail (big surprise). The secretary should have given you more info. She has done the same thing to me. In the past, I have asked her questions and she acts like she doesn't understand me or says that she doesn't know. I'm really sorry to hear about the alternate list, but maybe it is a good thing. She did say that she didn't know of any letters of acceptance going out. How reliable is this is anyone's guess. What date was your letter dated?

Cavedogg, give it to me straight. How many acceptances do you think have gone out? They take about 2/3's, so if they interview 300, they'll accept 200. If they've already accepted 150, is it safe to assume that the other 50 are coming straight from the alternate pool or what? I am so fricking tired of this crap. The alternate list is no different than what we've been on since we interviewed. Everyone knows that UM doesn't reject anyone post-interview until classes start right? Shoot, this is just turning into one huge waiting game. Any idea when to expect movement on the list?

I would venture to say that they won't touch the alternate pool until at least they give us deferrals an official decision. So, if they are still handing out acceptances, it will most probably come from the deferral pool. Just my thoughts.

it's actually dated april 24.
i just heard that it's not full (she thinks) from an M1 there. but i doubt she knows much about it. she just said she thinks it's not full cuz everything is so pushed back cuz of amcas. but she may be wrong...or right. who knows.

I can predict how we'll know, though. we'll use Papa Smurf as our Litmus Test. If he gets an alternate list, it's gone sour.

the secretary told me i'd hear in 1-2 weeks about a week ago. she told him the same thing, so he should hear something before Wednesday probably. that'll be our gauge, since's he's got great stats for UM.

as far as the alternate list. it says it's not finalized yet, and it won't be till "late in the application cycle" so although it's ranked, they can't tell you anything about your rank until very late, since it won't be finalized till then. it says you can send in updates if you want, and to write, saying you wanna stay on the AL.

:) Cane•••••What?! ofcourse this doesn't help canes! that's BAD news. if she'd been deferred and THEN been put on the AL it would mean they considered her a lot at one time and the AL might be a good thing. getting the AL right away does NOT sound good. ****
