I'm going to UM next year and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about where to live during the first year of med school. Do a lot of students live in those apartment tower buildings on campus? I'd appreciate any advice anyone has. Thanks!

TXChick:

As of now, I'm going to Miami Med as well. Do NOT live in one of the med school towers, they're absolutely disgusting. A lot of med students live in the Brickell area, or in Miami Beach. You could also live in Coconut Grove or Coral Gables (both are very nice areas), if you don't mind being a bit farther. Start exploring on apartments.com.

Peace,

Marmot

Txchick, are you a Florida resident? and could you please post your stats and significant ECs (pretty please)?

Hey hteres a hospital called LARKIN MED somewhere in miami. have u guys heard of it?

I am wondering because the school that i'm thinking of going to Ross University School of Med does their 5th semester clinicals (I believe it is) at the school.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure Miami would be a phat place to do ur med schooling =)

i haven't heard of it. but I barely know this city myself (lived 13 years here...it's pretty sad), i'm sure it's a decent place to do your clinical training. Do what you gotta do playa. Gluck.

Thanks for the advice MiamiMarmot. To answer everyone else's questions:
Yes, I'm a FL res. I am getting my undergrad degree (a BS in Biology, minors in chem and psych) at SMU in Dallas, TX. ~3.7 GPA, 29 MCAT, I studied in London for my junior year at the 3rd ranked uni over there, held lots of leadership positions, did 2 years lab research, volunteered a lot in both medical and non-medical areas, and am involved in a few "balancing" activities (eg sorority, intramurals). I interviewed at Miami Feb 25 and got my acceptance March 20.
I think that's all you asked for. Hope this helps!

Hey TxChick:

What city in Florida are you from originally?

-Marmot-

Hi TxChick. Congratulations for getting in!! It sounds like you've decided that you're definitely going to Miami. I also inteviewed on the 25th of February. It seemed like a very good group of people interviewing with us, for the most part. I'm the older guy from Boise. Miami is still my first choice, so hopefully we'll be classmates.

MiamiMarmot- I call St. Cloud home. It's a tiny town, proud home of the Silver Spurs Rodeo. We're right next to Kissimmee and Disney if you don't know where it is. How about you? Where are you from? Did you go to undergrad in FL?

Ida1- I remember you from my interview day. Have you heard anything from Miami yet? And yes, I have decided on UM definetely. My first choice was UF, but they didn't like me as much as I liked them, so I'm going to UM!

TxChick, I heard back at the beginning of April. I was put on the alternate list, so I'm waiting to see what happens. I was accepted at my 2nd choice, so at least I don't have to worry anymore! :) I figure that I'll give UM until the middle of June. After that, I've got too many things to do, wrapping up my job and moving a three bedroom house full of stuff that I'll need to have a solid choice.

Congratulations again on getting in!! Keep your fingers crossed that I hear something soon! :)

Hey all! Miami just sent out a letter with a website for all 2002 incoming med students. The site has a listing of places to live and student comments. The website will be updated as to important medschool info periodically- you should get the letter any day now.
As of right now, i'm going to miami too, so i'll see you there!
