Likely will be attending MSU this fall and my wife and I have begun the process of house hunting in the East Lansing area. Anyone here in a similar boat? Would love to chat if so.

Are you and your wife looking to rent out a room in your house? 😛

Hi Tygris -ha ha. Soooooo are you excited to get started in vet school? I know I am. I wish there were more MSU CVM 2010'ers on here. I have kept in touch with a few I met from my interview day (and another I met when out in Pomona) but not a whole lot.

The cost of living in East Lansing is roughly what we are paying now in Indiana so that's good. Have you gotten any leads yet for roomates? I noticed you posted also on about.com. Anyway - good luck! August can't get here fast enough! Ugh

Adeno

PS: Have you finished your MS degree yet?

I don't know what resources Mich State offers to admitted students, but U of Penn has a helpful forum devoted to new students and their questions. If you feel inclined, you could encourage the school to create one too.

Adeno - Yes it is so exciting! I sent out my envelope today... with the horrific $1000 check and all...! Kind of scary, with the decision being MADE and all. But I'm thrilled and I know I made the right decision! As far as my M.S. goes... no not done yet 😉 Won't be done for a couple more months, so technically I won't get my degree til August. But oh well! Nothing matters more to me now than starting at MSU in the fall... 🙂 If you hear anything about someone you may be in touch with looking for a roomie (assuming they don't have cats), let me know! 😉

2B, MSU does have a section of their student services website dedicated to posting for looking for roomies... unfortunately for me, hardly any vet-schoolers don't have cats, and I can't live with cats 🙁 So I've been using MSU's colleges of human medicine websites that also have roomie-searching listings... to see if I have better luck there 🙂 It's surprisngly hard to find a good roommate, but maybe that will change after April 17th.

Hi Tygris. I wish you were gong to Cornell (not that Michigan isn't a great program, but I didn't get in there).
The reason is, my husband and I will be buying a house in Ithaca and renting out a room and my husband is deathly allergic to cats, which makes it very tricky to find a vet school renter. It would have been perfect 🙂.
Anyway, good luck!

Haha, funny thing is - I'm a NY resident, so I sort of wish I was going to Cornell as well 🙂. I say 'sort of' because I'm quite sure that it's not the school for me (it makes me nervous that they don't do interviews, and I'm not really all about the PBL thing), but I certainly would have gone there if I had gotten in because of how much ridiculously cheaper it would be. Oh well, such is life I spose 😉 I've started looking into listings through the Michigan State College of Human Medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine, and College of Law also... I think I may have better luck in finding a roommate sans-cat there

Hey guys!

I'm going to MSU also. I've been in contact w/ a few other classmates. I just joined this forum recently, and I'll have to tell the students I've gotten in contact with so far about it as well.

I'm excited. And scared. But mostly excited.

I'm living in the graduate apartments with one of our classmates. Never met her. Should be interesting 🙂

Hi. Nice to see another future spartan vet on here. I see you are from out of state. Do you have an MS too? Tygris and I have a theory that MSU takes out of staters with MS degrees. I am actually originally from Michigan (Flint area)...but I have been out of school a few years, moved around a little, and wouldn't you know I lost my Michigan residency just when I need it most!

I have my M.S.....so I guess they better call me soon, huh. 🙂 Still waiting, and waiting, and waiting....

Nope, no MS here. Actually, I currently have NO degrees. I'm in my senior year of undergrad. A current classmate of mine was accepted to MSU this year (she's not going though) and she doesn't have a MS either. We're both RI residents.

I think that higher degrees certainly make you a more competitive applicant, and since there are limited number of seats for out-of-staters, it makes sense that they would be holding them.

Anyone kinda freaked out that there isn't going to be any water nearby? I'm 10min from like 10 beaches, rivers, bays, etc at the current moment. I've been spoiled in being able to study on the beach when it's nice out. I'm a little nervous about being in the middle of... land. I'm going to have to take up ice skating or something.

Well I've never lived near a beach in that sense... but all my life I've lived next to a Great Lake. I grew up in Rochester, NY and have spent my college years in Cleveland, OH. Michigan as a state is technically next to the Great Lakes, but East Lansing itself is quite far from the lakes! So it will be strange, no lake effect snow, colder temps, etc... but I'm sure you will get used to it. There's nothing like curling up to read/study in a local coffee shop on a cold winter night, in my opinion. 🙂

Sure there is... like studying by the lake/beach on a nice warm day! 😀
(I am going to DIE of S.A.D. in Massachusetts!! That is, if I don't freeze to death first!)

Bleh, I am so NOT a beach goer 😉 I can't stand 'em for the most part, except in the evening when there are fewer people about. But maybe that's a result of me growing up inland, who knows! Plus, I'm Indian, which means that even with 45spf sunblock I tan in about 5 minutes - which I don't need and is extremely annoying! So perhaps that also makes me a fan of the night-activities involving no beaches 😉

Haha... while you tan in 5 minutes, I BURN in 5 minutes! ("Then why are you out in the sun?" you say, to which I respond, "because I'm dumb.") Yay for Irish blood. I'm jealous of you...Forgive my stereotyping, but Indians are always GORGEOUS. I wish I looked exotic! Right now I just look weird.

Although I'm from the middle of PA, I've been living in GA for almost 6 years and my folks live at the beach in SC. I was just there this weekend and on the way home was wondering if I would be in MI sometime soon. It's going to be around 90 today, and has been in the 80s consistently here, so I'm a little freaked about the possibility of returning to long, cold winters. On the upside, I haven't been sledding in awhile.

Oh tygris, I should have wrote to you earlier I guess (probably just feel like I shouldn't talk too much because I'm not in yet).

I have two kitties, so you won't be able to live with me. I understand your dilemma though because after four years in GA, my immune system finally blew the hatch and I have to take antihistamines and antileukotrienes to remain hive and allergy free. I am allergic to some mold I can't remember and/or something else that isn't tested for (molds don't usually cause hives), but whatever. Thing is, the UGA path dept is down a flight of stairs and we had a massive flood a couple years ago, so I'm sure there is growth where I work. Anyway...

I vividly recall my few days in MI in February, when I only had to blow my nose due to the blowing wind and snow shower that hit me on the way into the interview (me in my skirt, it was a kodak moment for all in the north.....speaking of that, I was kinda miffed because official formal interview attire calls for a skirt, but everyone was in pants - which of course in retrospect I understood because I'm from PA - but I wanted to make the best impression, ya know? I can only hope it was worth it.....a la mokadet...still waiting).

Damn all you cat-ridden vet students! Why can't there be more FREAKS like me that are not only allergic to cats, but don't particularly like them either!?! 😉 Well, I like BIG cats, but I'm pretty indifferent towards domestic ones 😛

About your skirt - I wasn't aware that official formal interview attire calls for a skirt. That sounds rather sexist to me! I remember most of the women at my interview day had pants on, and the same goes for other interview I had. Pants are just more comfortable in my opinion 🙂 But I'm sure that no one thought any less of you due to your skirt. And I'm also sure that there are enough vets out there in the "old man's club" philosophy of vet med that would say that skirts are the only way to go - so who knows, maybe it's advantageous!

Just out of curiosity, which day did you interview?

Hey all you future MSUers! nice to meet you. I tried the roommate search thing (but settled on living alone in a one bedroom apt) but I basically had a hard time because I have two cats already and I'm worried about having behavior problems mixing many unfamiliar animals together. Some places i looked at already have like 4 cats.!!!!

I totally agree with you that it shouldn't be an issue; a person will be their best if they look and feel their best inside and out. However, I will say that some kind of suit (pants or skirt) should be worn during a formal interview. I wasn't trying to start anything, just trying to make fun of the chilly weather as a southern transplant. Hey, when I was in high school we had to dress up for all athletic events, so I can handle it regardless. I wore my share of pants, but a lot of the times us girls had on our skirts when we headed of to a swim meet in the middle of January in PA. 😛

Fri, Feb 17. So far, I haven't met anyone else on SDN who shared my interview day.

Dude, that is CRAZY!!! 😱 😱 😱 Must be a midwest thang!

I interviewed on 2/20, and also haven't spoken to anyone else on that day on SDN.

Hi, nice to meet another MSU-er!! Are you in-state or out-of-state, and what day did you interview?
Do you mind if I ask which apartment complex you've chosen and why? I'm considering moving in to a 1 BR either in University Apartments or in a complex where I know there are other vet students... at least that way I won't feel COMPLETELY isolated 🙂

I'm an in state student and I interviewed on 2/14/06. I think only in state students were there that day. I would definately seek housing that is not associated with the university (i.e. university apartments) because that is where some of the riots have started in the past. I got a place at the Berry Tree. It's on the southeast side of campus. Hilda, the admissions director, recommended it and said that alot of the students like it. One of the vets I work with used to live there too. I would also recommend that you contact Ivette (I think she is Hilda's secretary) in the admissions office and ask her if she has any leads on roommates. She was able to give me some that were not posted on the public thingie the college has.

Riots???? What riots?!? Am I completely in the dark about this?? 😕 😱 Do tell!!

Also, thanks for the advice about talking to Ivette, I just might do that! I'm hoping that once they post the "Welcome Class of 2010" website more may pop up too!

My two cents on the skirt thing...

Firstly I only thought about 1/3 of the people that I saw at interviews were appropriately dressed. Many were too informal (cardigans, ill-fitting clothing and/or slutty/sexy (lots of makeup, 2 inch heels). I do think a nice skirt suit...one that isn't super tailored is better than a pant suit....aside from the what is or is not kosher for women aspect....a lot of the pant suits I saw denoted a very "off the rack" at the sears juniors dept.....plus everyone wearing one looked like a clone.

If you're one of these ppl...don't flame me...it's just my opinion. My sense and regards on fashsion are a lot higher than what I practice IRL. I own a lot of clothes I like, but never wear b/c they are too complicated to deal with in the morning.

anyway...

Chemokine...where in Michigan are you from? I used to live in Flint. Went to U of M-Flint.

Also, how has my thread turned into a who's who on the vet school interview catwalk? Looking forward to the 2010 welcome website as well.

Tygris...MSU undergrads have rioted in the past over sporting events and I assure you it is not pretty. Hasn't happened in the recent past, but I think it was 1999 or 2000 anyway---cars turned over, fires every where, publicly intoxicated students chanting---you name it. The university cracked down pretty hard and handed out some expulsions and fines. Let us hope it doesn't happen again...but if it does let's hope mom isn't visiting us that weekend

I grew up around and attended Penn St. Now I am at Univ of GA. Feel free to ask me anything you want to know about anything associated with big schools. I've seen it all, good and bad.

Well, see now I'm just scared from what adeno has said and all the horror stories I keep hearing about undergrads at big schools! I went to Case Western for both undergrad and grad school, and it's pretty academically-oriented... noisy and unruly undergrads were never an issue, and most of us could care less about sports.

Honestly that was one of the big issues I had with Michigan - I can't stand sports, or universities that feel the need to boast about sports, or universities that regularly give out sports scholarships, etc.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand - is this why a lot of the available apartment listings advertise 'away from noisy undergrads'? Would living in University Apartments at a big state school really be that noisy and out of control???

Okay well first of all, I agree with you about everyone looking like clones. But at many schools, interviewers don't appreciate an eclectic look. I also agree with you that many were dressed vastly inappropriately for an interview, including shorter skirts, giant spiked heels, too much make-up, thin silk blouses, etc. Also, at my Western interview, several of the women had thick wool suits on. That seemed inappropriate - it's California! But at least that I can understand since many of us can't go out and buy more than one suit 😉

I do not agree with you, however, that a skirt suit is the answer to that. Skirt suits can look just as cloned as pant suit, and can also look just off-the-rack. Plus, it is much easier for a skirt to look like it doesn't fit you properly than a pant. And of course, the previously mentioned sexist implications - of all careers to be sexist in, veterinary medicine certainly shouldn't be one of them 🙂
In order to NOT look like a clone, I personally opted to wear a nice light brown pant suit with light cream-colored pinstripes, with a subtle pink uncollared shirt underneath. I felt a LITTLE out of place since it seemed like most other women were wearing black, blue, or grey. But at the same time, I looked different - and I wasn't wearing a skirt 😉 I got either an acceptance or a highly ranked waitlist from all places I interviewed so I guess it worked. That's just MY two cents anyway.

Well I guess since no one's looking to buy a house in East Lansing we had to talk about SOMETHING 😉

You must definitely check out the place where you are planning to live. I know this isn't always possible, but I HIGHLY recommend doing this. I am sure there are places in East Lansing where you will not want to live because it is an undergrad/party complex. This happens in every college town, and knowing how difficult vet school is, you will NOT want to live in such a place. Beware, because the semester is ending and you may not realize what it is like if you are looking sometime soon. My advice would be to ask around the MSU vet school (Ivette, Hilda, anyone else who you can talk to...even apartment agents may be truthful....or look on apartment web sites with reviews). Good luck and I do hope we will be classmates.

I think I'll be looking into Berry Tree since so many folks seem to like it, but I'm definitely going to check with Hilda/Ivette first. The reason I was considering University Apartments is because I figured that since they only allow faculty/grad students there that it wouldn't be too noisy. But it's still ON campus, and therefore risks rowdiness... Bah, I just don't know :scared:
I'm going to try to make it up there sometime in May to check places out, but as with many of us, life is so crazy right now I don't even know if I'll have time!
Maybe I should just go with one lead I have on a girl who owns a condo and needs a roomie... the condo is ~15 mins drive from campus on the highway, she said - far away from undergrads. But then I think I'd feel really isolated from all my classmates! I just don't know, all of this is too stressful

As to the riots thing they tend to happen around the time of big sports events. There have been a couple smaller ones over the past few years. I didn't go to undergrad at MSU but I know it can be a pretty rowdy place. The berry tree is actually in okemos and it's kind of far from campus (but not too far. it's over by the research farms and you can sorta see some campus buildings). I found this site helpful. www.dtnmgt.com they own the berry tree and several other complexes.

I'm not going to MSU, but can commisserate in the search for a good place to live. I found this site: http://www.apartmentratings.com/ an interesting indicator of places to live (once you get the name of the complex that you're interested in). I would take some of the reviews with a grain of salt since everyone's had a bad experience with landlords at some point in time. People tend to gripe more often than extol, which may lead to some horror stories and extremely low ratings. But at least its a barometer of how the tenants feel and yet another measure to go by (but I wouldn't exclusively go by those ratings alone). At the very least, it makes for an interesting read.

This one girl...fell down the steps while walking up to her interview room. I was waiting for mine and barely could keep from dying of laughter. I remember at the same school...while we were touring there was a pack of females in heels in the back b/c they couldn't keep up and then me and a guy (obviously wearing flats) were at the front. The person giving the tour was really irratated b/c everything was taking twice as long. At another place, you had to stamp your feet in the disinfectant bucket going in and out....that was also very amusing....

I don't think wearing a skirt-suit solves the clone issue....I do though think that for women it is a safer choice...but really it depends on your figure...you can go really wrong with either if you don't take a good hard look at yourself...

I had a green skirt-suit...like a sort of mat-leaf green (kinda hard to describe)....and like you I really felt kinda standoutish around everyone else.....I really shopped for it though...I remember looking at suits and trying to determine "does this suit say large animal vet".....lol....I think it was a good choice though....every interviewer/dean/admissions staff commented directly on liking it...maybe they said I looked like a booger behind my back, but I hope not, they seemed sincere.

I don't think what you wear is going to make or break anyone unless they're really on the fringe of what is acceptable. I do think though that it helps to be memorable if you can to it in a positive way....after a while they go back to your application and may or may not remember anything. Being "the girl in the green suit" is better than "jane doe applicant"

sorry about furthering the OT of this thread...

The berry tree is actually in okemos and it's kind of far from campus (but not too far. it's over by the research farms and you can sorta see some campus buildings). I found this site helpful. www.dtnmgt.com they own the berry tree and several other complexes.

Hey wow thanks, that website is very helpful. Maybe I'll just call that management company up and ask them which buildings tend to be more infested with undergrads 😉 Seems like Berry Tree has the best location though. Too bad there are no w/d's in the apartments... I've been spoiled with having mine here!

Hey guys...

So happy that there are others besides me who are so excited about next year and love chit chatting about what the future holds. 🙂

I'm living in the graduate apartments on campus. I'm living with a classmate who went to MSU for her undergraduate years, so I'm hoping she has a good inside scoop.

As far as the riots are concerned... I'm from Rhode Island. When the Red Sox won the World Series, man, did we have riots... AND IT WAS AWESOME! I had an on-campus room with a balcony, and I had a great view of an overturned car and a huge dumpster on fire. Girls were flashing the crowd, people were chanting anti-Yankees cheers. I thought it was HILARIOUS.

Obviously if it got too too noisy or out of hand then it might have become an annoyance, but it was exciting. It gave me an entertaining study break. I would have gone out there myself during their parade to the quad, but I was scared of getting caught in the middle of a fight and getting hurt.

I don't know... My roommates are party-hardy kinda girls, and I love it. I love when they fall UP the stairs because they're drunk and pee in the car during the ride home. It's funny. It's living. It's having fun. I'd like to be around people like that (for the most part) to keep me sane. Make me laugh.

Maybe I'm a little less mature than most of you, but I do know when to study and when to have fun. Definitely not saying that you guys don't. And I totally understand how noise can interfere with studying, sleeping, getting through the next 4 years... I don't know, I just think it would be amusing, a break from the reality of study study study.

If you guys don't live on campus, I'm sure I'll have some stories to entertain you with during class 🙂 I'll share.

I interviewed on Feb 17th also. I sat against the wall where the door was most of the time. I tried to talk to a lot of people, I wonder if we ended up talking.

Trying to remember. What do you look like? You sound pretty cool. I like the big school atmosphere, but of course like my quiet time as well. I'm glad I have never fallen while drunk (I'm lucky). You might remember me, as I was one of about two people in a skirt (suit)...mine was dark green. Ok, I'm jealous because you got in and I didn't (well not yet anyway....??? :meanie: )
Kate...hopefully we'll meet again as classmates

Hmm,

I'm trying to remember what everyone was wearing. I think one gal sitting directly in front of me, but with her back to me, was wearing a skirt. She had very short brown hair. I think she was talking about going on a separate tour of some facility with one of the other interviewees. You?

I sat near the pregnant interviewee, she was hilarious. I don't know if you remember her. I was sitting against the wall with her, Leah (my current classmate) and this awesome girl named Katherine from Boston (who didn't get in, but is happily going to Western). I'm not sure if you remember them. I have shoulder length brown hair... Had a navy suit with a baby blue undershirt. Kinda silly describing myself when there were so many people there!

Oh, I asked a TON of questions when the housing representative came in. LOL, I felt so stupid but I had so many questions!! I was in the back corner and everyone kept turning around to look at me like, you again?! haha. It was funny. Anyways, it doesn't really matter if we remember one another. I hope you get some good news in the coming weeks.

For those already accepted and admitted... Did you register for classes and get your e-mail addresses and whatnot? Gotta love that all our classes are in the SAME ROOM! And last ALL DAY!! I was telling Poorna about how my ass is going to be killing me... and most likely slowly start to expand as a result... FABULOUS!

Can't believe we're gonna be doctors. Responsibility.

I've posted 3 times this morning... I'm obviously avoiding my molecular biology notes, I gotta get back on track.

BYES!

Yeah that was me. I have auburn hair but it does look brown sometimes, especially in the winter. I kind of felt that I stuck out (sorta felt weird a little) because I went to the D-Lab to visit. I remember Katherine, and now that you mention it, I probably did talk with you. But if you don't recall talking to me then maybe we didn't.

I remember talking after my interview to a couple people. We all had one interviewer that was tough....ring a bell?

I remember the pregnant lady, she was cool too.

Anyway, nice to meet you...again.

Not that I don't like to have fun. I just don't really feel like I want to live right in the middle of it anymore. If there are loud parties every night in the house or apartment right next door to you it can get pretty annoying. Especially if you have exams and what not that start early in the morning.

Adenovirus, I am from Birmingham, Michigan. It's near southfield.

I agree, and there's certainly nothing fun about watching idiotic undergrads flip cars over as far as I'm concerned.

By the way... MSU CLASS OF 2010 WEBSITE IS UP NOW!!!!!!!!!! 😍

Hi Tygris,

I also had my interview for MSU on 02/20. I was the girl from Chicago. 🙂

Aw man, well I met a lot of folks that day (as we all did) and I think I'll need more information than that 🙂
Real name is Poorna. I was the Indian chick - I think I was the only one that day... Relatively short hair. From Rochester, NY. I was wearing a light brown pant-suit with cream pinstripes, and a light pink top underneath the jacket. I had my interview in the first group at 9am!

I noticed you're on the waitlist. Is MSU going to be where you go if you get an offer?

Hey Tyris,

I definitely liked MSU. I really like their campus, program, and facility, plus it's still not that far from home, so that I can go back and visit.

I have never left Chicago and love it here. All my family and friends are here, so I want to be able to atleast drive back once in awhile to visit them.

Hopefully I will be able to get off the waitlist and join the class of 2010!!! 😀

Hello....Has anyone from the waitlist been contacted yet? There seems to be quite a few of people waitlisted at Michigan. Good luck to everyone! :luck: They should be letting us know soon....hopefully!!!
