I grew up around and attended Penn St. Now I am at Univ of GA. Feel free to ask me anything you want to know about anything associated with big schools. I've seen it all, good and bad.
Well, see now I'm just scared from what adeno has said and all the horror stories I keep hearing about undergrads at big schools! I went to Case Western for both undergrad and grad school, and it's pretty academically-oriented... noisy and unruly undergrads were never an issue, and most of us could care less about sports.
Honestly that was one of the big issues I had with Michigan - I can't stand sports, or universities that feel the need to boast about sports, or universities that regularly give out sports scholarships, etc.
Anyway, back to the subject at hand - is this why a lot of the available apartment listings advertise 'away from noisy undergrads'? Would living in University Apartments at a big state school really be that noisy and out of control???

Firstly I only thought about 1/3 of the people that I saw at interviews were appropriately dressed. Many were too informal (cardigans, ill-fitting clothing and/or slutty/sexy (lots of makeup, 2 inch heels). I do think a nice skirt suit...one that isn't super tailored is better than a pant suit....aside from the what is or is not kosher for women aspect....a lot of the pant suits I saw denoted a very "off the rack" at the sears juniors dept.....plus everyone wearing one looked like a clone.
Okay well first of all, I agree with you about everyone looking like clones. But at many schools, interviewers don't appreciate an eclectic look. I also agree with you that many were dressed vastly inappropriately for an interview, including shorter skirts, giant spiked heels, too much make-up, thin silk blouses, etc. Also, at my Western interview, several of the women had thick wool suits on. That seemed inappropriate - it's California! But at least that I can understand since many of us can't go out and buy more than one suit
😉
I do not agree with you, however, that a skirt suit is the answer to that. Skirt suits can look just as cloned as pant suit, and can also look just off-the-rack. Plus, it is much easier for a skirt to look like it doesn't fit you properly than a pant. And of course, the previously mentioned sexist implications - of all careers to be sexist in, veterinary medicine certainly shouldn't be one of them
🙂
In order to NOT look like a clone, I personally opted to wear a nice light brown pant suit with light cream-colored pinstripes, with a subtle pink uncollared shirt underneath. I felt a LITTLE out of place since it seemed like most other women were wearing black, blue, or grey. But at the same time, I looked different - and I wasn't wearing a skirt
😉 I got either an acceptance or a highly ranked waitlist from all places I interviewed so I guess it worked. That's just MY two cents anyway.

Also, how has my thread turned into a who's who on the vet school interview catwalk?
Well I guess since no one's looking to buy a house in East Lansing we had to talk about SOMETHING
😉
