Is there anyone out there who is from Utah and attends Midwestern CPG? Besides being a 3 year program, what other benefits does MWU-CPG offer that the U of U does not have? I have noticed that there are not a lot of posts about the U of U's pharmacy program. If there are any pharmacy students that were accepted to MWU-CPG but chose the U of U, what were your reasons? Any advice or information about choosing one of these programs over the other would be very helpful. Thanks.

I am a PS-1 at MWU-CPG and we have about 3-4 students from UU, so many have made the move. Hopefully one of them will see your post and reply. I will try to talk to some of them tomorrow and ask them to reply.

Hey thanks. I'd really appreciate it! This decision is very difficult.

I chose mwu-cpg over the university of utah. Both of which are great schools even though the university of utah is ranked a lot higher than mwu. My reason was i just wanted to go to a 3 year program. I just feel that will suit me better.

If anyone else is moving from utah to mwu-cpg maybe we can split the cost of a Uhaul to take down there. Just an idea, reply back or PM me if you are interested

Rankings don't really mean much for pharmacy schools. Unless you view with great importance the amount of grants a school recieves.

I agree with insipid. They are not going to care at all where your school ranks when it comes time to getting a job. All of that goes out of the window unless you decide to go in a research oriented practice of pharmacy.

For those of you that go to MWU-CPG, has anyone who was interested had trouble getting residencies when competing with prestigious state school applicants, or does it depend mainly on the individual's track record? Also when will that medical center be finished across the street? I heard that Midwestern-Glendale is constructing two more buildings on campus and they are trying to add a dentistry and a nursing program. With this added growth, what do you foresee will happen with the pharmacy program?

I am sure there is a bias with regard to residencies. If the preceptor went to UA do you think they are going to accept a MWU student? THere are some pharmacists out there who think MWU students are UA rejects. The average age of our class is 30. We are older students who want to get on with our career/life, and we don't need/want the young college atmosphere, and 4 year program that UA provides.

MWU-glendale is adding more programs and buildings. I don't think anything will happen to the pharmacy program. Infact I am sure they are looking into ways to increase the class size. However, the big problem is faculty. It is hard to retain/find faculty. Although I am sure every school has this problem with more and more schools opening up.

The dean!! At least that is the rumor across campus in Sahuaro and Octillo.

Has there been very many faculty that have quit or moved on in the past year? I here that MWU really stresses clinical but the majority (like 85%) of the students want to do retail. Is money the biggest reason? How good are the internship rotations in clinical areas at MWU?

There were a few professors that left and I wouldn't be surprised if more jump ship.

There are a lot more retail jobs than clinical, so not everyone can have a clinical job. THere are a lot of institutional rotations in phoenix that have a clinical part to it. There are definitely more local rotations than Utah. However, I think we had less rotation selections than the previous year. Hopefully that trend will not continue.

Every good pharmacy program will focus more on clinical aspect of pharmacy. But every program will have more students sign on with retail. I tried to pick most of my roations to be institutional but the "spin" gave me mostly retail. I will probably end up in retail to begin with but wanted my rotations to give me clinical experience.

There are many things I can complain about MWU-CPG, but I think every program has things people complain about. I am happy with my choice to go to MWU-CPG and I think I would be more miserable if I went to a state school considering I am 30 and want to get on with my life.

Museabuse or 07pharmd, do either of you know the exact tuition amount for the upcoming year?

I just asked financial aid what is the max private loans I can take out for next year and they said tuition is not finalized yet. They did say you can usually predict ~ 7% increase. 😕

Thanks for checking. I made my final decision and I'll be at Midwestern in August. Does anyone live on campus that would like to share the pros and cons about it?
