Do the military General Surgery Residencies appear to be following the 80 hour work week?

i'm sure they're following it as much as any other program is. they're accredited by the same body, and have to follow the same rules as everyone else. as far as personal experience though, i can't help you-- i haven't talked to anyone in gen surg residency.

When I did my surgery internship in 2000-2001, the 80-hr work week had not come up yet & I regularly averaged ~100/wk, some months better or worse.

Since then, I've spoke to some of the residents & they are being forced to do the 80-hr work week, which is putting a lot of extra work on the attendings & limiting the # of cases each resident is getting to see. Beware the 80-hr limit...I predict a 6-yr surgery residency in the near future to compensate for the lost # of cases.
