can someone point me to a sticky that explains what exactly military medicine is?
is it medical school at one of the forms of millitary? or is it just the hpsp scholarship? what's going on?
i'm new to this topic and i'm a bit confused. maybe someone can write up a more basic info that new pre-meds can understand...
Military medicine = medicine practiced in all branches of the military.
How do I practice military medicine you ask?
1. Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) - THE military medical school, your commitment is 7 years AFTER residency plus some time in the IRR
2. HPSP - you go to school where you want to (the military picks up the tab), do your internship and residency in the military (usually) and your commitment is year for year the amount of the scholarship you accepted (they pay for 3 years of school, you owe them three years) or something like that. Read the stickies about HPSP. I don't know that much about it.
3. FAP - you go to medical school where you want to, do your internship and residency where you want to, think that you have too much debt and want someone else to pay for it, join the military. They pay off some of your debt, and they own you for a certain number of years.
4. Volunteer - you are already a practicing doc and decide that the military is the way to go. You don't need the money from the FAP program so you decline to have them pay your debts and just sign the contract. Sounds crazy, but I know of one doc who did that.
If you have further questions feel free to talk to a recruiter
