In Minneapolis the crime is very bad. One resident who just left her hospital at 9 am after call was assaulted in the parking garage. They stole her backpack, phone, car and even her coat. The police Lieutenant said the 'perps' wait for young people who are new to city life, usually early summer when programs start. Residents are now strongly encouraged to have a security escort when they leave the building.
Since the riots things are much worse because the police/security staff are very hesitant to intervene. Violence has extended to the suburbs and as far as Rochester where Mayo is at.
We know several docs who have or are planning to leave Minnesota. The schools, which had been exceptional, now rank pretty low.
Be careful about choosing a program in Minnesota.

Who didn’t see this coming? Literally woktivism taken to its most idiotic extremes.

Vote Trump. He wouldn't allow this to happen.

i will preface this by saying I don’t support trump or Biden, but Biden said in the debate that he would never defund the police because that’s stupid. It was one of the only things they agreed on haha

Technically he did as he is currently the president. The power he has to prevent it now is the same power he will have if he is reelected (assuming he doesn't just toss out the Constitution). Clearly, that power is limited.

Edited to add: OTOH, I may have missed your sarcasm font, but the sad thing is people still make this argument with a straight face.

Defunding the police is the stupidest thing ever. It's sad the voice of the liberals have transitioned from decent realistic ones, to that of the radical left. How do you fix problems like this and inner cities? You load them with good police, so businesses will be happy to invest in these places which will then drive further jobs and internships, more colleges etc. etc. There should be police reform, because clearly, they are often not held accountable for their actions, and there's a lot of bad folk. But abolishing the police will not change anything. You will get the same people who are the bad apples into similar roles of power.

From my understanding, the increase in violent crime in Minneapolis mirrors that of a larger trend across the nation in bigger cities. It's important to resist what may potentially be an easy confirmation of your own biases by tempering anecdotal evidence/personal experience with larger, more robust observations.

I think this might be a common misconception of the whole movement. It's not titled exceptionally well, but people are advocating for police reform when they are saying "defund the police". Generally speaking, of course. They are advocating for money to be diverted from the police budget to change the way policing occurs from my understanding.

There should be a major change in local leadership with current governments resigning if major reforms are to happen

If it’s true, demand an escort in and out of the building every day. All of you. Gum the system

Based on their posts about UMN from last year, OP might be the tiniest bit biased

But defund the police began here after the riots.
