Im brand new to this blog but ive heard a lot of questions get answered here.

here is my issue. i stupidly went to shoplift $266 worth of cologne to get some extra money because I was short on money since tutoring is my only job and got caught and booked for misdemeanor. i am trying to get it expunged but I am worried that even if i am honest with the pharmacy licensure department that I might get denied the access to take the exam. this is my first ever criminal offense and hopefully my last, so 4-5 years from now will I not be able to take the license exam? I talked to the pharmacy school i was admitted to and they said it is ok since it is not a felony but i am worried about the misdemeanor charge for shoplifting for licensure purposes.

any advice would be helpful.

You need to report it to the state board of pharmacy ASAP. They are the ones who decide whether it will affect your licensing. Since it is not a drug related offense you probably have a better shot. Be prepared to explain what you have done since to make up for it. Good luck.

do you think i stand a good chance? if i enroll in a shoplifting prevention online program and do community service could that work in the judge's favor?

I am so sorry! You say 4-5 years from now when you take the exam. So your a ways off from taking everything? If your record is clean, more than likely you can get an expungement (or in North Carolina you can get a 90-96) . (the only reason I know about all this is my Dad's a lawyer and my Mom's a court reporter :). My Mom said that she sees guys entering the military dealing with this all the time, everyone has pasts. So for right now, take a deep breath and work on getting it expunged from your record, and if it cannot be expunged then enter yourself in the online program and church programs and anything else you can find. Start seeing a counseler to show that you are making a positive change in your life, and don't repeat the mistake. And On most applications it states that if the offense was expunged from your record then you do not have to report.

Good luck - be thinking about you!!

PS. everyone - I have a friend going through a similar situation - but no charges, He lost his father and went through a rough patch and ended up in a week-long treatment center for alcohol abuse and he's getting ready to apply for licensure and has confronted me as to whether or not he should deny that he has recieved treatment..... No charges prior record ect, just a rough patch for him. I didn't know what to tell him? anyone have any experience here? Curious.

have you spoken with a lawyer? Try to plead no contest and some community service. Hopefully it will be a valuable lesson.

im going to tomorrow but i felt i should have waited for an attorney b4 being interviewed by the police. i could have made them say it was shoplifting instead of burglary. i would love to do community service to compensate for this

I don't know what state you will be seeking a license in. But in Nevada, you can look at their board meetings and see how they have handled people with past records and they have excused alot more than what you did. So, I would think that after 5 years with a good clean moral record - you would not have anything to worry about.

I actually have something similiar but happen before I started pharmacy school. I was a student freshman in undergrad and got caught with a fake ID. I wasn't convicted as I was put through the Pre-Trial Intervention program which is for minor 1st time offense in which after the program the charges are drop by the state. I was wondering is it worth having expungement done on this? As far as I know I still have an arrest record but no conviction as the state dropped it. Also this was at least 2 years before I applied and got accepted into pharmacy school. What are your thoughts?
