Hey Lee,

I might be interested as well. What are the responsibilities of a moderator, specifically for this forum? Also, what is the difference between a moderator and administrator?

I would love to be an MCAT forum moderator... I seriously love helping people with their MCAT issues. At my undergrad school, people come to me about their MCAT issues more often than they do our pre-med advisor. No kidding.. Granted, considering our pre-med advisor, that's not saying much... But everytime someone tells me they're thinking of taking the MCAT, I just get all excited and tell them that if they ever need any help or advice to e-mail me. I even gave one girl I met at Kaplan a brand-new copy of the AAMC VI test because 1 week before April 20 she wasn't sure if she was ready to take it... and I thought that test was the best predictor... I wanted to either help her get confidence or save her the trama of taking the test unprepared. I just know so much about the MCAT it's sickening... :)

I don't know why I like helping people with the MCAT so much... maybe because the experience was so challenging, exciting, fun and frustrating for me... that I just get a kick out of helping other people get the most out of it.

So please please please consider for moderator.
Thanks :)

hey RP,
What is this, an MCAT personal statement?

Well then here's mine:

I have taken the MCAT twice. I have learned both the wrong and the right way to study. But I realize that being a moderator is not about knowing the MCAT as much as it is laying the smack down on unruly posters. It is in this faculty I shine. I am comfortable with wielding my considerable power for the sake of good in this forum, and I desire to converse in the moderator's forum!

Yours truly,
Street Philosopher

Yes, but SP, one could argue that last year I was one of those semi-unruly posters (well not really, but maybe... I was a PR board transfer  )... and I have been tamed, and thus know how to tame... LOL

Since you guys are so eager to help ppl w/ the MCAT, maybe you could give me some tips....actually I have some questions
1- how good is the examcrackers 'verbal reasonaning & math' book....heard any raves about it?
2- I am having serious trouble finishing the sections on practice tests....any tips on how to work through passages faster?
I think I have some more ques.....I'll post them later.

Thanks a lot,
ladybug•••••1) It's my own personal opinion that you shouldn't waste your time with anything but Kaplan or PR review materials... unless you have some specific need (for example, you have trouble with math) I've looked through Barron's and Examcrackers... and I just don't think they are of nearly the same quality as Kaplan and PR. I used only Kaplan and PR and I felt very prepared for the MCAT.

However, everyone is a bit different... if you can, take a look at the Examcrackers review book and see for yourself if you like it or not. If you decide to get it though... I think you should also get a Kaplan or PR book as well.. as a suppliment.

2) Which sections are you talking about?

For verbal, the best way to get faster is to practice. Also, learn to pace yourself. ~9 minutes per passage, or ~27 minutes per 3 passages. Don't obsess about one question for 5 minutes. It's better to guess on one question and save yourself 5 minutes... then to run out of time and have to guess on 4 questions at the end that you might have gotten right, had you had the extra 5 minutes. Try never to spend more than 1.5 minutes on a question.

For PS and BIO... when feel you're running low on time... read the questions first, then the passages. A lot of the time, you don't need to read the whole passage to answer the questions. Very often you only need a formula or definition given in the passage. If you get stuck on a question or if the question obviously requires that you read information from the passage, then go to the passage and skin for info that might help you. And again, don't obsess about questions.

When you only have about 10 minutes left...make sure you've done all the discreets (sp?).

And always... when it comes to questions that require calculations... look at the answers first!! Sometimes all you need to know is to what power of ten the answer is. For example, the answer choices might be 2x10^2, 2x10^3, 2x10^4 and 2x10^5. If you don't first look at the answer choices, you might waste a lot of time calculating things you don't need to calculate.

Good Luck!! :)

Hi-

You can find alot of discussions on books, companies etc. We all have different pieces of advice, etc. I've taken Kplan (not the whole thing since I dropped out) and examkrackers. I'm a big fan of examkrackers and would higly recommend their verbal/math book. The math shortcuts are indispensible in my opinion. They really shorten problems to a few seconds. Also the questions that ask you what would be different if one parameter was changed (usually the answer choices are percentages) are a cinch after reading this book. I'm also a fan of their verbal strategy. Jon actually uses passagfes from actual aamc exams in the verabl book for teaching purposes. I never ran out of time in any of my sections either. If you are in the NYC area, I would also highly highly recommend the ek course with jon orsay teaching. He is an incredible teacher. Also, you get ALL of the aamc tests (well 2-6) and they are given as the full lengths, not some prepared test. I've looked at the kaplan and pr books as well and don't see how they are better at all. I would suggest you look at these books for yourself. Why do I like Ek so much? I really developed my mcat intuition, meaning I learned to really see what the question was asking...it's never "that hard" since they only test you on certain things. They are always trying to hide the basic science. Anyway, I can go on and on, sp PM me or email me if u want more info.

Better yet, you call examkrackers and get Jon orsay himself and ask him why you should use them not kaplan or PR.

And one last thing, ultimately, how you do on the test is up to you YOU need to make the commitment to study and do your best. Reallly think about why you're taking this test. And, make the first time taking it your last time. I took it this past april and have no plans to retake it. Obviously, you want to pick a test prep that you feel the most comfrotable with. So do your research, find out about who teaches the class, their qualifications, the quality of the books, and if u can extra help outside of the course.
Jon does extra help if u ask for free. i.e. if u need to meet like 30 min before class, etc.

The math and verbal book by EK is very short. I was able to finish the verbal section in about 30 minutes, so I would recommend that you borrow it from someone if you can. I haven't looked at the math section, so I couldn't comment on that. I thought the verbal was helpful because it told you what your priorities should be when reading the verbal section. Your priorities are:
1. tone
2. main idea
Notice that details aren't included in this. You will be asked detail questions, but you'll remember these naturally, and it shouldn't be the focus when reading. Also, keep in mind that the only thing you should get out of reading the passage is tone and main idea; don't be stressed if you don't know the details. That's the most important thing to know, and as long as you keep that in mind, you don't really need the book, in my opinion.

As for finishing on time, rel. prime hit on the two most important factors: 1. practice 2. read the passages. Practice is necessary so that you get used to the test format. This helps a lot, trust me. Reading the passage is important because there are lots of information in those passages that you would otherwise have to search for if you didn't read it. This goes for both verbal and science sections.

Thanks a lot,
ladybug•••••Ladybug,

I have examkrackers audio and they say that when you can't finish in time, the best way to increase your score quickly is to not look back at the passage when answering the question. I suppose a lot of times you don't need to look back, and they say that people miss a lot of clues hiding in the questions. After that, I guess you work your way up to having enough time to look back at them. I've never tried this technique, so take it with a grain of salt!

Moderator:
I'd be willing to do it!! But, uh, I haven't yet taken the MCAT (planning on August). Are you suuure that it wouldn't be better to have an a moderator who can fully relate to the posters?!?

I'd be interested in being a moderator! I took the MCAT twice, so I have some knowledge of it...And I think I'm a levelheaded and nice person! :D

Thank you guys so very much for your responses...they are very helpful. Its nice to have ppl out there that can relate to the frustration and agony of studying for the MCAT. You can all be my moderators :) (at least at heart <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> ). I wish you the best in your journey to med school... :)
