Hi everyone,

I just visited a gastroenterologist who also does primary care and a question came to mind. Do MDs in a fellowship, studying an IM subspecialty such as gastro or cardio, moonlight using their IM board certification or board-eligibility?

Are they paid more than residents who moonlight (for example, FP or Peds sometimes moonlight while in their residency)? If so this would make IM and a subspecialty a bit more attractive than other specialties, because the compensation during moonlighting would help balance the extra years of low salary.

Thanks!

There are definately opportunities to moonlight while doing fellowship, depending on what sorts of things you are doing from month to month. I know that where I'm at (UW-Madison) several of the fellows moonlight being in-house staff overnights at the VA and get paid pretty well to do it. No idea how their pay compares to a resident moonlighting before being BE/BC; my guess is that it's comparable but institution-specific, but that's just a guess.

Moonlighting can definately add a significant chunk of change to your wallet, although fellow+moonlighting is still going to make far less than attending-level pay.
