Hi everyone~

I've been reading through the AMCAS help thread (which has been great👍 ) and I've managed to accumulate a good number of questions myself, so if there is anyone out there who might be an expert on AMCAS, your help would be very much appreciated 😉

So, here they are:

1) When listing coursework, I have to put my class standing for each quarter (I go to UW and we have a quarter system). I had 20 credits going into college from AP tests and have been "one class standing ahead" so to speak every spring quarter. Do I put my class standing in credits or my class standing as in what year I am in college?

2) Can I send a transcript in now (even though they have nothing else on file for me at the moment)? I took a college class through my high school when I was a senior and was wondering if I could send that one in now and get a file started. Also, when I list this college in "schools attended" (which is different from UW) do I classify it as "undergrad"?

3) My last question has to do with the race/ethnicity questions which are just oh-so-fun. My parents are from Greece, and although I was raised in the US, my first language was Greek and I've been very much surrounded by the culture my entire life and haven't had your average American upbringing (yeah, go ahead with the big fat greek wedding jokes 😛).... so, my race is white but wouldn't my ethnicity be "Greek" then? In the scroll-down menu, the only options for ethnicity (besides "other") seem to infer that it only applies if you are of Hispanic, Spanish, or Latin descent. This is sort of confusing to me, as I have a friend who is Persian who is in the same boat. Do I select "other" or should I settle with the fact that maybe AMCAS doesn't care?

Any input would be appreciated.... thanks 😎

Class standing is by units.. this is from the manual:
High School (HS) College-level course work taken while in high school
Freshman (FR) 0-32 semester hours
Sophomore (SO) 31-64 semester hours
Junior (JR) 61-96 semester hours
Senior (SR) 91 or more semester hours
Postbaccalaureate
Undergraduate (PB)
Undergraduate course work attempted after the first Bachelor's degree
has been earned
Graduate (GR)

You can get all transcripts now, the sooner the better. As soon as you fill in the intro you can print the amcas transcript request. Then you can send in the requests and they will match it to your file.

I can't find the other link. I have a similar problem. I am first generation american and have been raised in a very different way then most of my white friends. However white should be suffient. When you fill out your personal statement you might want to include your culture and it most probably come up at interviews.

Hey maoeris, thanks so much....

I guess I have to utilize my math skills since credits are counted differently when you're on a quarter system 🙂

As for the ethnicity question, I would like to include it into my personal statement, as it has been a huge part of my life, but I was planning on focusing on my own battle with illness (since that is more relevant) while in college and don't know how well it would tie in... I could always just try to incorporate the two together (i.e. briefly describe how my cultural values enabled me to deal with the whole ordeal) and see how it sounds.

Anyone else have input on the ethnicity thing?

Thanks again 😎 <--the SUN is out in Seattle!

I think Greek is just white...

here's a question, kind of stupid, but eh

I'm Jewish (Russian/ashkenazy) and "of course" that means I'm white.

But I wonder should Jews be considered "Asian/Middle Eastern"? Sephardim would, but Ashkenaz wouldn't since we once lived in Europe for more than 1500 years.

Also are Spaniards and Portuguese "Latin?" I know some people whose grandparents were German and moved to Puerto Rico, thus they are Hispanic.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it seems "Race" is more determined where your past 3 generations LIVED over what maybe your ancient relatives were... Well I'd hope so.
