Just wondering what you guys think are the most effective books to study from

I the Gold Standard Tapes, BRS Path, the HY series, and the UCV series.

Waht else should I get

I'm a first year and I want to start over the summer

First Aid for the Boards Step 1 is the absolute minimum you should know. I think the High Yield series are more concise and hit the highlights more than the BRS series. The BRS series were great for individual courses, especially BRS path for organ system courses.

You say you are a first year and are going to take the summer to study. I say that this is the last free summer of your career until your retirement. Do NOT waste it!!! You can still do something of significance (i.e. boost the CV) and still have fun.
1) Take advantage of an international program in medicine (primary care specialties love them)
2) Do some research (you won't get much accomplished but you are making your interest known or perhaps will take time off to finish a project)
3) Surf or whatever your interests are

Good Luck to all!

medicial microbiology made ridiculously simple is another must.

I'm with goofyfoot, though. Have some fun over the summer.
