Hi,
Im a British Medical student about to enter third year in Medicine MBBS in the UK.
I have a long-term planning of moving to Canada.
I am aware it is easy to move to Canada as a GP/ Family Physician. However, I am currently more interested in the internal medicine specialities like cardiology and respiratory medicine.
I know it is very difficult to move as a subspecialist there however due to fewer job opportunities.

Therefore, could I move as a general internist, then after working for a few years and gaining Permanent Residency, could I then apply for training to subspecialise?

I know I would have to take the various MCQEE exams and potentially board exams, though thankfully training in the UK is fully recognised.

Also, if anyone knows about how the 2 year work placement before receiving Royal College Accreditation works, please let me know.
Can you apply for jobs without Royal College of Canada Accreditation?

Struggling to find information as to if this route is viable!

Thank you!

If you want to subspecalize, you're better off doing it right out of residency, you're gonna have a lot more trouble trying to go back many years out of finishing residency. If you're concerned about subspeicality job options you can just work as a general interest even with subspecialty training, and then work towards getting a job in your field. For your questions about accreditation you should reach out to the Royal College and the Provinical College of Medicine in the province you'd like to work in.

Ah, I didn't think about that option!
Thank you!

The best time to move is after you have completed all of your training in the UK (including cardiology or respirology training). Come to Canada for a super fellowship, these are unregulated extra training that often serve as auditions for foreign trained doctors looking to find a job in Canada. They also help you network.
