Moved away from spouse or sig other?

Hi all,

I am just curious.... How many of us have moved to where our med school is and our spouse or significant others have had to stay behind because of employment? It is a problem that non-trads and older med students face when they get accepted to a school away from where they live and have to move there.

I did move away from my long-term SO (6yrs) to get my Master's and there was no way I could realisticly ask him to drop his job for such a short period of time. Besides, it sort of strengthened our relationship. Med school might be a different story. If we can't be in the same town, at least be near each other (like within 4hrs driving distance)

"only applied to local schools due to a significant other not being able to move"


...that would be my vote 😀

I wish I could've chosen that option. But we live in Indiana which has a grand total of ONE medical school. And I didn't get in there.

Not only am I leaving my husband behind, but my 10 year old daughter and 4 year old son are staying in Indiana while I move to Ohio. 🙁

I was just working on the update letter that we have to send to Vietnam each year as part of our adoption agreement. I asked my son what his favorite thing in the whole world is and he said, "Snuggling up with you."

How can I leave now????

Will your family be able to join you after your first year, or do you have to live apart for all four years?

I wish I could've chosen that option. But we live in Indiana which has a grand total of ONE medical school. And I didn't get in there.

I can relate. I came off shift at the ED yesterday to find 4 voicemail messages on my cell. All from my daughters (6 and 9) -- sobbing. "I miss you mommy! WHy can't you be home to tuck us in? I know you can hear this message (It was on my cell. I couldn't hear it while it was being left) so why won't you answer the phone." 🙁 The guilt was darn near unbearable.

My husband is still looking for a job in Ohio. Hopefully, we won't have to live apart for long. He came home this morning with news that his current job may only be current for another 18 months anyway. (long story & not at all relevant) So......one way or another, he'll need new employment.

Luckily, OU has a large consortium of hospitals where you can do your clinicals and the one in Dayton would be do-able, though a pain the behind. We're hoping that we'll only have to be apart for a max of 2 years. But you just never know. If it looks like there won't be any other way to all be together, I'll consider trying to transfer back to Indiana.

All guilt aside, we must *really* want to become physicians to be able to make the kind of hard choices that we've made.

Two years ago today I left my girlfriend of two years behind in California as I drove across country to Vermont. We got engaged last December, and are getting married this November. So, I applied for a transfer to USC, and was recently rejected. Now, we'll continue to spend more time apart, but in the end, we hope it will be worth it.
