Hello everyone,

I am moving across the country in about 5 months and I wanted to poll native Baltimorians/others with knowledge regarding good/safe places to live around Hopkins. I already know about Federal Hill/Fells point/Owings Mills/Columbia. Any other suggestions? Any "hidden jewels" in Baltimore?

Any info is greatly appreciated

I live in NE Baltimore and love it. A little further from the big hospitals but I can easily get downtown in 20 minutes in the mornings. housing costs are much cheaper here than the areas you mentioned. check out www.livebaltimore.com -- it has profiles of neighborhoods and lots of good info.

There are honestly no good, safe places to live immediately around Hopkins so, unless you absolutely love the city, it may be worthwhile communting. That's what most folks do.

Federal Hill is a few miles away, and relatively safe. Parking may be an issue. The same goes for Fells Point. Fells point is probably a bit safer and nicer, in my opinion. Columbia is very, very nice, but the drive is pretty bad (traffic issues in the morning and evening). It takes approx 40 mins to drive to Hopkins from Columbia.

I live in Owings Mills, which is very safe (25 mins drive NW of the city). I chose to do so because the metro runs right from Owings Mills to the main Hopkins hospital (journey time: 22 mins) and, if you are housestaff or a fellow, the rail pass is only $20 per month (usually around $60). Parking at the main hospital is very expensive - even for houestaff.

Check out Mount Washington too. It's closer than Owings Mills and maybe a little cheaper.

Good luck.

Ditto Scottish Chap - but the metro pass is now FREE to houstaff and fellows. Owings mills is nice - about a 25 minute drive on doctor time, a little longer with traffic. Great area. We were orginially looking in the Canton/Federal Hill area but as was mentioned, the price was STEEP ($340k+ for a newly renovated 3-bedroom row home (built orginially in the early 1800's). Owings Mills was very affordable. If you know for sure when you are moving and want info on doctor's loans and housing, PM me...

hey JR, do you plan on going out at night much? If so, you might want to consider living in one of the trendy fun areas like federal hill or canton. If you want to live downtown but be really close to hopkins, then there are some nice apt buildings around hopkins that are relatively safe due to the fact that they have a private garage and you never have to go outside. However, you'll have to pay more for them unfortunately. If you decide to live outside the city and commute, make sure your route allows you to avoid the beltway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not palnning on going out much being engaged and all (well, maybe occasionally 🙂 ). We are also looking to purchase a condo. Right now it is looking like its going to be Owings Mills, but we will definately look into those condos close to Hopkins.

Thanks again for everyones input,

There is also the area directly north of the undergrad campus, it is a dafe decent area and not too expensive. The drive to the med school is about 10-15 minutes in the mornings.

Yeah the area around Homewood, Loyola and Towson are good....brings back memories 👍 The condos/houses in federal hill and fells point used to be cheaper but now the prices are through the roof. It's harder and harder to get property out there. Baltimore was really cheap back in the day but has dramatically improved in the last 10 years. I think the two phenomena are clearly linked.

I am personally a fan of the Towson area.

yeah, it's a very convenient place to live. But as I mentioned earlier, make sure you can avoid the beltway on your commute to hopkins . . . or you'll be sorry!
