Yeah, this healthcare reform BS is working. What a great way to make a broken system even more broken  And unfortunately unless you make less than 400% of the federal poverty level, you won't qualify for any tax credits/subsidies.

Did you even read the article? It's perfectly logical that insurance premiums will go up once insurers are forced to bring prices for the old and the young closer together. WELCOME TO SOCIALISM!

Did you read the article because it says you can get tax credits if you make up to 4 times the poverty level not less than.

Hey Chuck-E-Cheese:

Did you read the article? Especially the part that says:

Predicting exactly how much any individual's insurance premium would rise or fall is impossible, experts say, because so much is changing at once. But it is possible to isolate the effect of the law's limits on age-based pricing.
In other words there may be other provisions that offset this and since they will be getting 32 million new customers, they may not have to raise premiums as there will be competition to get the business.

In other words if you are trying to predict what will happen to premiums in 2014 when this particualr provision kicks in you have been nominated as the SDN:

Same thing!! You only get tax credits if you make LESS THAN 400% of the poverty level (aka "up to 400% of the poverty level").

Less than 400% of the poverty level? Your math skills are beyond ******ed.

The poverty level in the USA is ~$10,800 so a little over $200 a week. $43,000 is a 400% increase in the federal poverty level which roughly equates to someone who makes $20 an hour. In other words, if you work a 40 hour work week for a year and make less than $20 an hour...you qualify.

The fact that this estimate comes from MSNBC, one of the most liberal news outlets, scares me cuz it means it isn't conservative propaganda! And I never said I was predicting what was happening in 2014. I posted a link to an article, written by someone else. Way to shoot the messenger.

If you don't mind me asking how old are you, oldtimer?

That's exactly what I meant. Less than 400% of the poverty level refers to an income of less than $43k.

And last I checked pharmacists make more than 20/hour.

and what percentage of "young people" are pharmacists?

I think the point is that, if you're bringing in a salary which is greater than 400% of the FPL, you shouldn't NEED government subsidies.

If I "predict" that if you scratch your ear it will make me a murderer.... then you scratch your ear.... and I kill someone....

Am I:
A) clairvoyant?
B) a murderer?

Are you:
A) wrong for inducing my murderous ways?
B) justified in responding to the need that your ear be scratched and not responsible for my villainy?

the itchy ear = broken health care system
me = health insurance lobby
murder = raising insurance premiums prior to any implementation of new legislation

NO... as in zero... new taxes hit insurance companies until 2014. The addition of 32 million customers is expected to offset the additional cost burden of eliminating pre-existing condition exclusions and lifetime caps. If it doesn't, premiums will go up. They will, as they are now, be required to prove the need for premium increases to state insurance commissions... and, "We want to make Obama look bad." will not be a sufficient requisite.

oh yeah... almost forgot: Socialism!!! RAH, RAH!!! Stalin!!!! Obama is the antichrist!!!! RABBLE, RABBLE, RABBLE!!!!

This article is posted on MSNBC, but it's the friggin associated press. Did you ever take critical reading.

Additionally, if you think this bill is socialist, you went right past chicken little to stone cold *****. It means you failed critical reading if you ever took it. Canada has socialized medicine, so does most of Western Europe. This is nothing but a big fat insurance reform bill and if you don't see that, there is no hope for you. It's like the guy who walks into the pharmacy looks around and asks if all you have is bubble gum. It's absurd on the face of it.

And for your answer, I am coming up on my 28th year behind the counter. The one thing that gives me is something you young-ins don't appreciate and that's perspective. When I started there were NO computers. I have seen all of the changes in pharmacy and I have a pretty good idea of what's going on now.....

This is not socialist at all. I wanted the bill to be socialist/communist but it isn't. What I wanted was there to be an increase in taxes (I'm thinking, 50% income tax on a single person who makes more than $250,000/year, and 50% income tax on families who make more than $500,000/year).

17%?? that's superb considering the rate hikes this year of 30%, 40 and even 69% in California, WITHOUT health care reform.

lmao...is it sad that I know this is the first stanza of the old Soviet national anthem without looking it up or anything?

Can I just ask why the words "Stalin", "communist" and even some Russian text is coming up in this thread? Apparently some people aren't familiar with the differences between socialism and communism.

If it's not socialist, who's paying the subsidies for people to get insurance?

If it's not socialist, who's paying the subsidies for people to get insurance?

The same people who pay for war, aid to foreign countries, etc etc

Why is this such a big deal? Oh...yeah I forgot, it's a black democrat's idea- it can't be good. Oh and where was he born again? he must be a terrorist! Run!! This is getting old-

Tax payers.

Ohhhhh I see, you think that paying taxes is socialist? Please, get out of my free America.

Srsly??

I should have known that, given the Stalinist health care system I work in.

Americans beware! If you divert funds away from making weapons into paying for healthcare for everybody, it's a slippery slope that can only lead to gulags.

Just because there are taxes levied doesn't mean its a socialist endeavor. If taxes are taken to subsidize corporatist interests, it is by definition fascism. I'd consider this a fascist bill.

McCarthy is rolling over in his grave...

SDN is infested with communists. I have here in my hand a list of 205—a list of names that were made known to the mods as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy in our forums.

Time to fire up the HUAC. It's like the Salem witch trials, with more pomp and circumstance, but less fire.

Okay so we agree it's the taxpayers who pay for it. Thank you.
Don't bring race into this issue. I never said anything about race. The only thing getting old is people who assume anyone disapproving of Obama is a bigoted conservative.

Tax payers.

Yes, taxes are a form a socialism. Heck anyone who attended a public school or drove on a public road benefited from socialism. I have no problems with my taxes supporting schools, healthcare, etc but there's a difference between a safety net and a hammock.

Good point. It's socialist too though. That S word is getting overused in this thread. I gotta stop pissing off the Obamessiah's supporters so I'll spare you some rhetoric, people are starting to think I'm racist.

Ok, genius... I'll bite.
What is the difference? And how do you implement policy to draw this clear line?
I'm asking for what you WOULD do, not what you WOULDN'T do.

So, I guess your health insurance premiums now don't go to anyone else's healthcare? How nice for you. I've got this crappy insurance where they take everyone's premiums and pay for the claims out of everyone's premium payments... wait.... I just realized that..... NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've got SOCIALIST INSURANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
M***** F*****!!!!
That's it. I'm moving to Costa Rica where they have free market policies about health care. What? Socialized medicine there? Ok, I'll go to Canada. No? OK, how bout France? No?? Damnit! Isn't there a single developed nation on this PLANET that doesn't suckle at the Marxist teat of health care? No? I'll start my own planet! We will have true free market health care!!! If you come crawling in to my ER with your broken kidney, we're going to ask for a credit card. And if you don't have one, we'll boot your sorry arse out the sliding doors! We will even work out some in-house financing to help grease the wheels of industry. Let's just hope you don't bleed out while we wait on that FICO score to come back. 592 FICO? hmmmmm.... stop bleeding on my floor, deadbeat! NEXT!!!
I know... I know... the EMTALA forces ER's to see everyone. So nice of those doctors and nurses to clock out while treating those poor patients. It is a show of kindness by the property owner's to suspend collecting land payments on the hospital while they treat the uninsured. It's also really sweet that all of the device and supply manufacturers donate that stuff to help treat those who can't pay. Jeez, I can't imagine how much the hospitals would have to write off if it weren't for all that kindness and generosity. That hospital would have to write off millions a year just to treat uninsured patients! And who would make up the difference......?

run along to your klan meeting.

...along with the rest of 54% who disapprove of this healthcare bill. It'll be standing room only. Surely they must be racist.

86% of americans believe there is a magical man in the sky controlling everything, too.... doesn't make that argument any more compelling.

Are you really that stupid? Please tell me you understand the difference between an election and a poll? At one time 60% supported health care reform. Maybe we should stick with that poll.

It only matters at election time...... If you don't understand that, well your knowledge of government is about as good as your reading comprehension.

When that poll showing 60% supported healthcare reform, it was probably long before the Louisiana Purchase, the Gator Aid, and the Cornhusker Kickback.

I tend to base my reasoning on the most recent data at my disposal. You've been a pharmacist long before I was born, surely this makes sense to you, right?
