is it completely uncommon for someone to get an MSW (as opposed to masters in MHC) en route to a counseling psychology PhD later on?

i ask because i'm still figuring out whether or not a PhD would really suit me in the first place. so, with that in mind, if i absolutely knew that i wanted to get a masters prior to starting a potential PhD program, would it make sense to do the MSW as opposed to the masters in MHC?

i'm really not sure whether LCSW's or LMHC's have higher salaries, generally. specifically for practicing clinically.

my main questions are:

1. which degree would do me best in order to help me get into a PhD program in counseling psychology?

AND

2. which degree (and licensure) would do me best if i ended up deciding not to continue for a PhD?

thank you.

If I don't continue on for a PhD/Psy.D, I am doing the MSW. Hopefully, after I become an LMSW, I want to attain my LCSW. I waivered back and forth between the LMHC and LMSW/LCSW, and I decided to go with the latter.

msw's can go on to lots of second degree programs... i know msw's with MPA's, MPP's, MPH's, MEd's, MD's, and of course, PhDs...

i think the only potential benefit you would have in choosing a masters program in the same discipline as the doctoral program is a potential 9-12 credit hour transfer... otherwise, they still want you in residence for the same amount of time, completing the same amount of study and research

at least hatat's been my experience

good luck
