Any words for one getting ready to interview at MUSC. Has anyone out there, below their mean, been admitted----can we talk?:scared:

I interviewed at MUSC in oct...my mcat is beloew their mean but my GPA is well above. when i did the formula (GPA X 10 + MCAT) i was only .4 above. THEY LOVE NUMBERS!!!! i hate to say it...but it is true. they love minorities and big name schools and high numbers. they have a reputation to uphold. i have friends there and it has a very competitive "feel" to all classes. i did a summer research there and found it competitive and hard to live in a city as poorly laid out as charleston, as crowded with tourist, and has expensive.
as far as interviews, it depends who you get...mine were ok...one was 10 min late, one was super quiet. both were very nice though. no hard questions. i was not accepted yet not rejected out right. strangely, the letter they sent to infom me was dated 8 months prior and stated i had not been accepted to the 2002 entering class...which were mistakes that angered me since they expect us to be perfect, or maybe i was bitter
anyway, if you are instate, you have a shot, regardless. if you are URM, you sit pretty well. if your numbers are high, you are practically in. did you apply to USC? give me some more info and i may be able to help ya a bit more...i guess this should have been a PM, but maybe others got this from the interview too.

Hello Valmont,

I agree with Streetdoc in some regards....the Dean of Admissions will tell you outright on the interview day that it is about numbers. They take your MCAT, GPA, and interview and recs and put numbers into a formula...above that number, you're in. Below that number, you're rejected or waitlisted. If you have one bad out of 3 interviews, you get invited back to redo one of your interviews.

My interview at MUSC in Sept was actually the one i felt best about. One doctor, Dr. Lyles, just took me on a tour of the hospital and we chatted while we talked. Another one of my interviewers was a researcher, he was kinda dry but it wasn't awkward or anything. I have a genuine interest in rural healthcare and he was able to answer a lot of my questions. The third interiewer (i had 3 interviews that day unlike other applicants because i was coming from CA and couldn't do my 3rd one beforehand) was a 4th year med student and i found this one to be the most difficult. He asked a lot of ethical questions, questions about situations that could make me uncomfortable, and one interesting thing he asked was when he saw that i worked in a lab, he wanted me to explain to him how to do PCR and gel electrophoresis as if he were a homeless person on the street with no experience in sciences. It was more challenging than i thought!

Anyhow, it's a great school with a very laid back atmosphere. My friend is there now and she actually works her tail off but she likes her classmates. I go to Duke and we have a really good trackrecord of getting students into MUSC. We generally get nearly all of our applicants into MUSC. The four kids other than myself applying from Duke this year have all gotten in. I don't think the name of your school has too much to do with it as long as you take advantage of your opportunities in college.

I also interviewed at USC and found it too be a bit too small for me. Plus, Charleston is MUCH better to live in than Columbia! It's more of a college town and the College of Charleston girls are pure eye candy! Some of the best i've seen in the country...up there with the Kentucky, FSU, UT gals....

As of now i think my decision is down to MUSC and Georgetown. If you have any more questions Streetdoc or Valmont feel free to IM me and i'll try to help. But don't worry about your interview Val, it's one of the more confortable ones and as long as you're yourself, you should have no problems.....

Had an interesting interview. I'm from charleston, so I knew one of my interviewers. The other laughed at my application and asked me why I was bothering to apply to MUSC. Take that as you will.

As far as preparing for your interview, just relax and be yourself. Everyone there is very friendly and polite, and will generally make you feel very welcome. The student interview tends to be a bit more aggressive in terms of the questions and pace. It feels more like a job interview than a casual conversation.

As a piece of candy myself, I have to agree!!😉

PM me if you want more advice about MUSC. I have been interviewed and accepted and know quite a few students in the program.

I would agree with you Explorer..there are slim pickins' at Duke...that's why i always love coming home to charleston for breaks from school and visiting my friends at CofC...nothing but pure pleasure. Hey Isidella, are you going to MUSC definitely. We might be classmates....
