so the good news is that I am headed to dental school, which I am fully excited but the bad news is that its MWU-IL, which will cost me a ton, so I am thinking of applying to specialties, even though initially that will put me in deeper financial hole.

My question is directed more at the MWU-AZ students but did you have any difficulty in getting a residency (non-GPR). MWU-IL still hasn't graduated a class yet so I could not ask them. Did you have to work harder to compete with the likes of UCLA/UCSF/Harvard in order to stand out?

looked at the MWU-AZ website and found this

  • 1 going into Pediatric Dentistry graduate program
  • 2 going into Orthodontics graduate program
  • 2 going into Oral Surgery graduate program
  • 1 going into Orthodontics graduate program
  • 12 going into General Practice Residency or Advanced Education in General Dentistry program
curious to know how many applied though

I want to know how many apply too. Seems like most are interested in general dentistry. From what I've heard/read/seen, graduated classes have done fine right out of school. And there's a good amount of military who don't seem interested in going further at the moment. So I don't suspect it's a massive proportion of the class that applies.

Access to the specialists in clinic seems pretty good for those interested in whatever field. They aren't pushing us to be general dentists or leaving us without resources. I don't know about IL. But I wouldn't worry too much about not having a brand name school on your app.

Those figures have increased. I know an additional 3 into pedo, 4 into endo, 3 into OS, 1 into ortho, 2 into perio, multiple into aegd/gpr. My figures are conservative. I am sure there are more as well.
