I just got done with my DAT and here's the score

Bio 18
GChem 18
Orgo 23
QTR 20
Reading 17
AA 19
Science 19
PAT 17

I don't think this is gonna get me in any school, especially with my GPA of 3.0 in undergrad and 3.1 science GPA.

Do you guys think I can get into any schools, hopefully VCU, with the DAT score combined with my GPA?

Hey buddy, I don't think your score is that bad. AA if 19 is pretty good. And orgo 23 good job! Now I am not sure about the GPA because I think many schools have variable requireents regarding GPA. You can contact the school and ask for stat. But there is also much more to your application than just DAT anf GPA: your undergrad school makes a difference, extra activities and expereince. I would also run ths with your prehealth advisor at your undergrad institution see what he/she says.
And it is still not late to retake. But at any rate good luck with your admissions process.

Hey golf

I'm in your exact same situation. I have the same GPA. To be honest with you, I think you have a good shot at NYU and BU. You may be borderline for Temple and USC. I think it will be tough to get into any other schools though. I'm only saying this because I have estimated my chances to be the same assuming I got those scores.

19 AA is damn good though so congrats. If I were you just study for another 6 weeks and see if you can pull those scores up just a tad. It could make a difference.

golf,

seriously i don't think that you should even have to think about retaking the DAT. dude, i don't get it. why are people so worried about getting 25's here.

your scores are all above 18 except for PAT (still good) and RC (still good). if you have heard, many people are having 16's and 15's in RC and PAAT so having 17 with the rest of your scores are going to be enough.

like Balki has mentioned, its not just the DAT and GPA that will matter. your statement letter, research, dental work, and LOR will matter too.

unless you wrote a totally terrible statement and have no dental experience then you have a very good chance of getting in.

i think you'll be fine and please do not worry. you have done well and try to enjoy it!

Perfect

Good advice but keep golf's GPA in mind. I have the same GPA and when you have a 3.0-3.1, you are a boderline candidate. A score of 20 AA and 18 PAT can open some doors that may otherwise be closed to a person with a 19 and 17. Yes, a lot of people get into dental school with lower DAT's but they also have GPA's of 3.3 or higher to compensate. Getting in is just tougher when your GPA is borderline.

And while LOR's, Personal statements and extracurriculars do factor in. This is still a numbers game first and foremost. They look at all of that other stuff after you have broken into the game. And a lot of schools won't let you play until you meet certain numbers.

If she is content with attending NYU or BU, I wouldn't retake the DAT. But if you want to go to other schools like UOP, Temple, Nova and some others, a higher DAT score will be needed.

I'm not putting down NYU or BU. It's just a judgement call and ultimately where golf wants to attend.

Thanks everyone for your input. I agree that 3.0 GPA is borderline and I needed good scores on the DAT to stand out from all other applicants. But before I sign up for a retake, I'm supposed to have a tour at VCU next week with the assist. dean. I'm gonna ask if he says I need to retake to get into the school or not and if he says no, then I won't. If he says, yes, then I will. I'd rather not retake it if I can help it. It's a lot of studying and $200 I can save for other important stuff, like new lightbulbs in my livingroom or a flatscreen monitor for my computer that I really want 😱

Thanks for the input though and I do appreciate how others think.

Like everybody else has said, a 19 isn't a bad score, but you needed to score much higher to assure acceptances with a low GPA like yours.

People can say a 3.0 isn't low, and they are correct in the grand scheme of things. Afterall, a B average isn't bad.

In the dental admissions game, however, there are many other qualified candidates with higher GPAs. Matriculants this year will sport a ~3.4 with ~20 on the DAT.

That doesn't mean you won't rock as a dentist, but it might mean that schools will never have a chance to get to know you or see your personality because you won't get interviews.

NYU and BU are the most promising given your stats, but even those aren't a sure thing.

Good luck and keep your head up!
