I just got a letter from the University of Manitoba (my home school), and I'm in! :D I had been expecting this, as many of you know, but it's still nice to have the letter in hand. I also won a full tuition scholarship, one of only ten, so it's nice to know that they think I'll be in the top of the class.

I've already committed to a year of research (on the advice of a Manitoba faculty member), so the question now is whether to defer or decline...

But anyway, at least I have an acceptance in hand from somewhere...

Woohoo! :D

congrats!

I don't think it's ethical to defer and apply to other programs, assuming that's what you're gonna do.

What to do? Tough choices...

Congrats Brandonite!!!! :D  :D

Even though you said that you were expecting this, you still need to go out an celebrate!!

Best of luck with your difficult decision.

If I decide to reapply MSTP, I will have to decline.

congratulations!!!

congrats! i would say defer because going through the application process again would really suck; plus a full tuition scholarship can't be beat. but you might want to hold off on a decision until you hear from Duke. good luck!

Congratulations!!!!

Congrats brandonite!! :D

Congrats bro!!! :D :D RNAgirl said she has a surprise planned for u!

Anyway, thanks everybody!

To those of you that are wondering... I didn't apply MSTP anywhere this year. And the MD/PhD program at Manitoba leaves something to be desired, so I've given some serious thought to applying to MSTP schools. That is still very much up in the air. Hence, the defer/decline question.

Congratulations brando! We knew this was coming, but it's nice to finally have it in writing, eh? F?licitations, Dr. Brandonite! :D  You're gonna be one great doctor, judging from your caring, encouraging posts. :D First moderator, then med school (booyah!), what's next?

Congrats sweetie!

Aww, thanks, Foxy!

If you keep being so nice to me, I'll have to start flirting with you, too... :D Just fair warning...

That is very good news. Congratulations!

Congratulations fellow Canadian!!!

tally up another one for the math nerds :)
it'd be tought to turn down an acceptance to apply again under any circumstances, but take the time to realize just how much a FULL scholarship is!
that is awesome!

I don't want you to start flirting with me.•••••No, I don't think you have to worry about that, man. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

And thanks, and good luck to the fellow Canadians that seem to be popping up...

Congrats brandonite! Its great that you at least have the choice to go this year, even if you decide to reapply.

Congrats from a fellow canuck! Good Luck!

Congrats brandonite! :D

Congrats Brandonite!

As for your question to reapply MSTP in the states, I am not so sure I would do that. I know two Canadian friends, one got into (U of Toronto, McGill and UBC all MD/PhD programs) and is attending U of Toronto but she did not get in a top 10 schools in the US for MD/PhD (she was shooting very very high and ONLY wanted top 10 schools). Another friend got into UWO MD/PhD and got into a top 10 school in the US for straight MD (rejected by that school and other top 10 schools' MD/PhD programs. you see a theme here? my friends are only shooting for the stars....). He decided to suck it up and paid the first year tuition (30k US down the drain) and eventually stayed for a summer of research following MSI year and got into the MD/PhD program starting second year. So he is now getting his tuition paid and will get stipend during the PhD portion. However, he did take a gamble and did not get his first year tuition back (wouldn't that be nice if he could?).

Another friend is an international student from Asia. He went to a small college in the US (you or most admissions committees would not have heard of it before) had 4.0 GPA there, got 36 MCAT. He eventually got into U of Texas at Houston and Albert Einstein for MD/PhD. He was aiming high too and was a little disappointed (but IMO, he still gets his tuition paid and should be happy).

So I would say think about it carefully (I would personally just go to U of Manitoba on full-scholarship). However, if you decide to apply to MD/PhD in the US, be sure to apply to a HUGE range of school (don't just shoot for Duke, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, etc. ONLY).

Also, just a thought, I don't think that Canadians are eligible for MSTP since it is funded by NIH (i.e. US federal government). Some schools with MSTP just use their own private funds to fund your MD/PhD stipend + tuition. I am not sure if you are still "technically" in the MSTP programs.

good luck!

Cobgrats. Now it is time for the customary clappig gaemlins:

Brandonite! that rocks!

Yahoo! And full tuition. Man oh man.

My boss went to University of Manitoba and he is a research scientist. I think he just did a regular MD program.

Yay!
Yay!
Weeeeeeeeeeeee!

congratulations!!! You deserve it!

Congratulations brando!!! Ah, mon meilleur ami, je suis tres heureuse pour tu!!! It's so wonderful that you got accepted with a full-tuition scholarship!!! But it certainly wasn't a surprise to me!

You know I'm biased towards the MSTP, but if you decide to reapply this year, I'll help you in any way I can. :D

Again, congrats mon cher brando!!!

Congratulations Brandonite!!     :D :D

Great job!!!

 AWESOME!!! Congrats man!

Hey, is Manitoba already offering acceptances? UofT has not even finished interveiwing. Congrats on your acceptance! I know it feels good :p
About declining or deferring, I don't know. I personally wouldn't do that. I would take what I have and run with it. Full tuition, no less. But then again, I'm not too crazy about MSTP.

And to the guy who was wondering whether Canadians are elligible for MSTP, Original got in MSTP at 2 schools (at least) and he's an international student.

Sorry, I'm late! I was outta town, but I just wanted to add in my "felicitaciones" (congrats)!! :D
