Hey Guys,

Before I start just wanted to say HEY and...great forums here, I've spent the past few days reading different posts from 'What are my chances?' lol (It's interesting reading other people's questions, since I find myself asking that exact question often.) to the Merry Christmas post that will probably be right underneath this once I post it. I look forward to becoming part of the community :D.

Now okay..I had a question...well its not really even a question...but I would definitely love some advice, seeing how everyone here is pretty well informed in the area of Medicine to some extent at least.

I'm currently a sophmore at a private college going for a major in Biochemistry, minor in Peace Studies and Computer Science. I've always been really interested in the sciences, medicine, and technology. I've taught myself the foundations of a few programming languages and currently going in depth into C++....and I have alot of goals..or dreams to say the least..with the skills I hope to acquire. I really want to intertwine technology and medicine in the future with maybe some kind of application...etc..maybe a major release of some sort during my years in medical school (that is if I get in). That all is far away though..for now I started a website www.Medilogy.net, which I hope becomes the premises for later releases that I hope to make to the medical community. Right now the website is in it's early stages...kind of a blog/medical news and tips website, where I hope to expound my general knowledge, while helping others by spreading news and information. I really want the site to expand and maybe one day hope to add a forum. I know that won't be possible until there is a strong following on the site. Okay this post is getting really long!

So my question. I was looking for suggestions regarding what I should do with the website, or what direction I should take it into. I was debating whether or not to add a personal blog that adds my opinion to a topic (after researching 'x' topic), along with maybe video content. I really want to expand it and would love to bring it up while I apply for different medical schools. In the future I plan to start a initiative to donate needed supplies to impoverished areas with the money that the site makes via local/online sponsors. ( I currently have a plan in the making for that..)

So what are your suggestions? How can I increase traffic flow..or what kind of unique content should I bring to the website to grab an audience that comes back again to see whats new? Or anyone interested in helping me with the project? Maybe it would be good on your resume also?

I'm really not sure and your suggestions reallllly mean alot for me.

I hope I posted this in the proper category and wonder if anyone will read through all that lol!

Thanks!

Hey man (or woman, if you're a girl), I don't know if this is what you're looking for but if you do an MD/PhD you can get a PhD in Computational Biology or Bioinformatics, which places an emphasis on using computer modeling and other techniques to drive advances in medicine as well as medical technology (in that case it might be better to get your PhD in BioMed E. and get into research that involves computing). MD/PhD will lead to a career as a physician-scientist where you'll spend about (or more than) 80% of your time doing research, which can be basic, translational, or clinical research.

If you don't want to do anything like what I just described, you'd probably be set just getting an MD and integrating your other interests in your free time and after you graduate!

Did you not read his post, or did I grossly misread it?

I don't think you did. It doesn't seem like the OP wanted to pursue a career into it, let alone a PhD. Maybe I'm just seeing things. It is quite late.

Hi spsrgy,

I started a blog similar to the one you aim to start a while ago (see my signature). It gets about 1-5 new visitors a day to a couple of my more interesting posts, but overall I haven't had the time to write very much.

As a matter of fact the most interesting post is the very first one I made about balancing chemical equations using algebra. It just occurred to me that there weren't very many websites that explained how to systematically balance chemical equations.

The bottom line for a successful website is CONTENT. Post something that people are interested in (balancing chemical equations or deriving the Michaelis-Menten equation). Once the major search engines index the site you'll get a few hits to the more prominent posts every day.

Hey, thx alot for the replies.

evergrey - I have looked into bioinformatic...I'll probably take a course or two towards that area, but as a career I would love to be a surgeon..spinal possibly..not sure exactly. But yea for now I was looking for what I should do specifically for the site. Mm...I see a new post regarding bio informatics coming soon :) on it though. and its 'man' ;)

Capncrunch - lol I enjoyed the thread...added a lil entertainment to my day.

Naijaba - Hey, thx for the input. Content is really something I have been trying to focus on. None of the articles are copied...they are rewritten by reading an article and researching it more in depth to make it more comprehensive. The site was getting targeted by google and bing real well and traffic was around 50-75 visitors a day at one point after 3ish weeks. But yea I will focus on the content more now...I really want to program an organic synthesizer for undergrad students...put in the compounds..the reagents..and bam possible outcomes. I used to have a site that reached 22k members on the forums, however, tht was regarding sports..and forums aren't possible without manpower of atleast 4+ ppl. I'm trying to figure out a way to make the 'Ask Us' area stronger by allowing ppl to ask questions..forwarding that to doctors I have in touch...and adding to responses with a little research..?

Thx for the responses guys! Any ideas big or small...go far!

Heh I guess I saw the C++ reference and medical research was the only thing I could come up with that was related to both C++ and medicine :p Anyway my reply wasn't directly on-topic but it was peripherally related which is good enough for me!
