What shoes should I wear? (No, I won't tell you where I am going to wear them, or what the rest of my outfit looks like) just pick a pair. (random?)

Figure out what you are looking for in a school (in terms of schedule, blocks, PBL, research etc), where you want to go to school, and start eliminating those that don't fit until you get down to the number you plan to apply to. The shotgun approach may work, but it's better to be able to tell a school why you want to go there, and by seemingly picking 40 unrelated schools at random, I'm not sure you can defensibly do this as of yet. Other than there being a handful of schools in the same states, I don't really see a common thread -- for instance you have a number of state schools other than your own, a couple of religiously affiliated schools, as well as a school with a largely minority student body. Figure out what you are looking for, and the cuts will likely be easier.

OK.. to reinforce the above post - have a plan for choosing schools.

1. Start with the MSAR.
2. Eliminate all schools that are in places you would not live
3. Eliminate all but 1 school that have numbers way beyond your reach
4. Eliminate all schools that have a mission different than your interests (eg if you are not interested in research, don't apply to schools that want researchy applicants)
5. Eliminate schools with a teaching style that you dislike (eg block schedules, PBL, small groups, shorter basic sciences etc)
6. Add your state school. Just do it.

OK.. did you do all of that? How many schools are left?
