Location, Location, Location. The Bay area is great....

Yeah I agree the commute will potentially suck, but the residents feel the exposure you get at SF General is amazing.

Lots of perks. $3000 moving stipend. Many resident retreats, ect.

The residents were very laid back and I felt like I really clicked with them.

Hoping I get my top choice, but would be thrilled to go down to #6.

Hey M&M, for only being an hour apart, Buffalo and Rochester sure made a different impression on you. Was it the attending who rips on the interns while the applicant tour is marching by? Tonem, you got one weird list. You'd rather be a general surgeon than go to Pittsburgh? Geez, what does that say about Pittsburgh? Hey KickBackDude, don't make me post your list for you, I know you're reading this. And MikeCWRU, thanks for not making me the only one who went to too many interviews.

The only bad thing about Pittsburgh is that it's 2000 miles from California.

Here's my rank order list of programs that have missed out on me!

1) Saginaw
2) Christ
3) Resurrection
4) U of I
5) Grand Rapids EM program
6) and everyone else!

All you programs will just have to wait for my next year's application!

Annette, I didn't understand your last message - were those programs you left off your ROL?

hornet,
my understanding of annette's message was that those are the programs that are going to miss out by not giving her/him an interview.

WOW, Hornet....after all that bad talking about how "those guys suck - every one of 'em, from the PD down to the look-how-bad-ass-we-are residents" you ranked SLR #1. Is this a joke? Did you mis-use our trust? What's up, dude?

My Rank List:
1. St. Luke's-Roosevelt

3. Univ of Chicago

Sweetfynesse, you do deserve an explanation. Two things happened that changed my mind regarding SLRHC:

1) Second look: The PD wasn't quite such an ass when met outside the interview. He didn't begin our second meeting as he did our first: "You're the 14th person I'm interviewing today. Is there really anything you can tell me I haven't heard already?"

During the second look, the residents I met were nicer, albeit still somewhat snotty. Without the hot female EM applicants around to hit on, the guys were much nicer this time. (Again, they were still kind of snobbish.)

So why did I pick SLRHC, despite my not loving the residents and PD?

Brings me to reason #2.

2) A woman. An intelligent, beautiful woman with a whorish demeanor but the heart of a virgin pixie. She lives in NYC and I'm chasing her. So I picked the program closest to where she lives. That's it.

To hell with all the advice people give you about picking a residency program.

Thanks for the explanation. After all this time, I was about to question the entire validity of statements posted on this forum...I know many people only use forums such as this to get, get, get information from other students/res/attd, never planning to add their 2 cents.

I am glad you went to the second look to get a better prospective of the program. I, too, did a second look, more so because I was in town for another interview and thought it might help. I liked their program from the first day I interviewed. I interviewed there on their first day, so I guess the PD was still fresh (although, he was still seemed to lack the best personality). Yet, I had a strong gut feeling about the place that couldn't be denied...

There are definitely alot of factors to consider when choosing a program, and I don't blame you one bit for considering your whorish woman. I if I had a mandingo man, he would've factored in my decision as well. For me, I've always wanted to live in NYC for a variety of reasons. In terms of prestige, SLR doesn't compare to many places on my ROL, but I had to consider the entire package, not just the residency program itself b/c we'll get great training anywhere. Anyway, I have a whole life...at least I like to think so. Hey, maybe will meet on the other side...

Thought I should actually contribute to a thread for once...

1. Wake Forest
2. Hennepin

5. Baystate
6. U of Michigan

13. NY Methodist
14. Beth Israel

this is a great thread. Since it's out of our hands now....keep the rank lists coming. I find it very intriguing how varied some of the programs on an individual's list (Location, new programs, 2-4 higher than 1-3 and vice versa). This confirms (or will confirm after match day) that there is a spot for the majority of the applicants.

Here's mine:

1) U Chicago
2) SLR
3) NYP
4) Cook
5) Maryland
6) Jefferson
7) BI-NYC
8) SUNY-Stony
9) Mt.Sinai
10) Drew

as you can see, it makes little sense. I went with my gut. For me each program has its advantages and disadvantages. I would be happy at any of those programs.

let's keep this thread moving...

My ROL:

1. Palmetto Richland
2. University of Arizona
3. Maricopa
4. Rochester
5. Vanderbilt
6. Christiana
7. University of Connecticut
8. University of Texas - Southwestern
9. MetroHealth
10. Akron General
11. Saginaw
12. USF - Tampa
13. Thomas Jefferson
14. Detroit Receiving
15. SUMMA
16. Mayo
17. Henry Ford

Did not rank Sinai-Grace or Yale.

Before anybody goes ballistic, I am well aware that this list is longer than 15 programs and that I spent an extra $60. My advisor and mentor recommended that I list every possible program I could even if it meant spending more money because he said it beat the scramble. I don?t expect to go very far down, but given some of the problems my school has come across in the EM match in recent years, I felt the $60 was well spent.

Good luck to everyone on March 20!

YEAH, NUKE!!!!!!!!

Hornet, Blackcat is right. Unlike Quinn, though, I don't give out mixed signals by using a picture of a beautiful woman as my avatar! Quinn in a thong? Thought you guys didn't like wedgies?

Just a quick question or questions.

For those of you who did not apply to Sinai-Grace Hospital, was there a particular reason?

For those of you who did not rank Sinai-Grace who interviewed there, what caused you to make your decision (i.e. snoopy).

For those of you who did rank it; however, ranked it down on your list, what was it that caused you to place it where you did?

As a resident there, I am just curious to hear what people have to say, what their impressions are/were, and what can be done to improve the program, and the interview experience.

Thank you.

I applied to Sinai-Grace, but declined the interview. I actually don't know much about the program, but I did know that I didn't wanna spend the next few years in Detroit. Obviously I didn't do enough thinking prior to applying to a $hit load of programs. Thus, I also turned down Wayne State Univ, St. John's, and Henry Ford...

I guess if any interviewers out there memorized my response to "where else did you interview?" they can now figure out who I am but alas it would not matter.

Calm down, Shaft! No PD is going to ID you. Sheesh! The paranoia of some people - honestly, I hope you were kidding. (I just gave you an out. Take it.)

Grrrrrr... everyone seems to have ranked SLR highly, and said everyone seems to belong to the elite class of candidate (based on the other programs interviewed at and ranked), so my sorry arse has little chance of matching at SLR. Oh well, Methodist ain't far from the city, right? I can still commute to chase my woman.

Sweetfynesse: my woman is not "whorish" but has a "whorish demeanor"; her heart is that of a virgin pixie's, remember? Please don't be callin' my woman (who isn't mine, who may never be mine) whorish. She's a sweet kid.

MikeCWRU: Thanks for starting the greatest thread ever. Pioneers like you....

So my ROL is pretty scattered..... But somewhere in the deep recesses of my skull it makes sense.

1. Harbor
2. Highland
3. Brown
4. Pitt
5. USC
6. OHSU
7. Davis
8. Christiana
9...........................................

I am pretty sure Id be happy at any of these. After these it gets a bit sketchy. The only programs I did not rank were Vandy, Cincy and UCLA Oliveview.

In response to your question about Sinai Grace...

Overall I thought that it would be a good place to train. It was obvious that they see a very high acuity pt and the residents have plentiful and early opportunities for experience in procedures and management of critical pts.

A couple of turn offs were that many of the FMG residents there seemed to have quite a chip on their shoulders about the fact that they were FMGs. It isn't exactly something I can put my finger on but some seemed to resent the fact that I am a U.S. grad interviewing at "their" program. The theme almost was "We as residents prefer FMGs since they are discriminated against at all the other programs." I remember one resident in particular who would ask about some of the other programs I was interviewing at. When I told him he would begin to rag on some because "they wouldn't give him a chance since he was an FMG." This exchange left me with some concern about how well I would fit in with some of the personalities there.

Another concerning aspect of my visit was the recurrent theme of "We are really so much better than all the other residencies in town since we see more critical patients than any other." This comment was made mainly in reference to Detroit Receiving. It seemed like they were more concerened with comparing themselves to the competition than just introducing the candidates to their program.

I did think the PD was a pretty solid guy and I thought Dr. Barton was a very nice and interesting person. (Interesting in a good way). As I stated previously, I do think that one can receive good training there. Possibly superior in respect to level of critical care experience in the first year compared to others. I did in fact rank the place near the middle of my list so I am obviously prepared to go there if it comes to that. I personally don't find the prospect of living in Detroit that big of a deal. There are ample suburban type areas relatively near the hospital. It isn't like you have to live in a burned out warehouse downtown if you live in Detroit.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

Being an FMG (and ripped to shreds by Mike in a prior post), Sinai-Grace AND DRH both shot me down (and my school is ALL OVER those programs); the DRH PD I emailed wrote back saying, "I rereviewed your app, and
I stand by my decision.

I'm very selective...I'll only go to a program that takes me.

You should have realized by now that Mike is a complete bastard. :D I hear it has something to do with a lack of sex...

Your lists are all great! Really, it is much appreciated. I know there is that poll about which number on your ROL you matched too, but maybe you could all put up where you matched after you ROL. Just a thought. As a 3rd year, I thank you all.

I know this forum is a micro-representation of all EM students, but I was curious as to the conspicuous absence of anyone ranking UPENN. I saw several people ranking nearby Philly programs (Einstein, Jefferson, Temple) but no one even mentioned not ranking UPENN.

Is this because they did not offer anyone here an interview, no one here applied there, or something else?

Just curious, thanks.

Coleman,

I didn't apply to U.Penn - I wasn't interested in a 4 year program in Philly, especially with several good 3 year programs in the area.

I know several people who interviewed there and liked it, but none are ranking it towards the top of their list.

Actually there are some safeguards in place for people who do not certify their list in time (at least at my school). What happens is that the student affairs office can download a list of students who have not yet certified and contact those students the day before it is due. Plus, the day after the certified lists are due a person from nrmp calls the med school representative if there are uncertified lists so that they can contact the students and get the lists certified (late). I was surprised to hear that you don't just scramble, but figured with all the time and money spent on this process there must be a safety net.

4 years?
Philadelphia?
And you have to ask?

Seriously though, I've heard nothing but good things about UPenn, but I made my initial app list off of 2 things: location, and length of program.

Exact same scenario here. I went with the shot gun approach, got interviews at every single program in Detroit, and declined them all after I realized I had enough interviews elsewhere.

I just did not like the PD at Buffalo for some reason. He rubs me the wrong way. Also I got the feeling he is very much against moonlighting. Since I am planning to moonlight, for the educational experience of it offcourse :D , I thought I would look somewhere else first. On the other hand, I loved the PD and the residents and every attending I met at Rochester. So, as far as I am concerned the two programs are as far from each other as if you had to go from one to the other on foot, in the winter.

I would post my list from last year, but I can't for the life of me remember where I saved it.

Anyway, I notice no one listed UIC......any specific reasons?
I'd love to know.
