hey everyone. i'm sure some of you already know me, i'm the guy who founded the ucla interview thread, and there was the dartmouth issue as well.

ok i didnt get into my state school, as well as dartmouth and i am still waiting for a decision from ucla.

i am doing research this summer in the department of surgery, and i am a masters student there. if i dont get into med this year, i planned to do the masters in 1 year and reapply.

ppl around me r so pesimistic. "masters cant be done in one year". "getting into med next year isnt a guarantee so maybe ud wana quit" "try dentistry too"

although i know with every minute my hope for ucla is sinking, tho still afloat right now, and desperate ppl go to desperate measures. i would do anything for a seat at ucla

however, i wana hear from those who support my 1 year masters plan (this summer til the end of next summer). do u think i can do it??

i have given my case to the the power above, but wana know what if anything there is to tell someone like me.

thanks for reading.

I know what you mean about the dentistry thing. People are always telling me "They're the same thing. Why not be a dentist?" And I'm like those two fields are nothing alike.

As for your masters plan I'm in the same kind of situation. Except that I'm taking the two year route. But my advisor and head of the grad department has told me he would write me a release letter and would have no problem letting me go if I get in during this cycle.
As for your plan I think it can be done. Are you doing a thesis or nonthesis? If your doing a thesis then it'll be tight. Not just with the defense and putting together a committee but with having to do thesis work while applying to med school. Have you considerd going back the summer after your first year in med school to finish your thesis? This is what I'm considering if I get in next year and haven't finished my masters.

hey

its a thesis, and i totally need to earn my MS b4 i start MD cuz i can earn "bonus points" when applying to my state school according to the dean.

hey, if there's anything this forum shows it's that people who stick to it get in eventually. i think the one year masters is great b/c it is still good cousework, but less of a committment - so if you get into med school for the next august you don't have to wait a whole extra year while you finish your masters...
stay positive and NEVER listen too carefully to advice - everyone's situation is different.

when i went to my premed advisor he told me that if i was applying to med school i should apply to dental school as well - and when i said no he accused me of not being committed to the health professions! WTF!! seriously, i hate teeth, and being a doctor has NOTHING to do with being a dentist! some people like that stuff, i don't - you obviously don't either, and dental school is too much of a committment to just "try" when it's not what you want.

the point is, i ditched my premed advisor and his dumb advice, vowed to take all outside opinions w/ a grain of salt and did fine on my own - waited a year after graduating to do research and then applied.

people get there in all different ways. you know what you want, so you carve your own path to get it. the masters program sounds like an awesome start. and when you apply again, apply to lots of schools b/c they accept in such a random way...

in the meantime, good luck w/ ucla - the game's not over yet.😉

So are you going to be applying after you earn the masters?

thanks ppl for ur insight

if ucla doesnt take me, i am going to apply this month!!! my PI knows it, the whole lab knows im gone in aug 2004.

i made it a strong point b4 i started.

XENON, get started on your thesis as soon as you have enough knowledge to be productive on it, even if you only work on it (reading literature, looking at data, etc) a few hours a week. Then you can hit the ground running when you start working on it full-time.

I completely understand your reaction to the dental-school suggestion, but I *will* offer one point in defense of dental school: I noticed that you are doing research in surgery. Oral surgery, to me, is closer to medicine than dentistry, for those reading this thread who might be in a similar situation ... Good luck with next year's app if you don't get off the WL this summer.

xenon,

i completed a thesis (research)-based m.s. in one calendar year. i started my program in august of 2001, finished in july of 2002, and started med school in august 2002. as you can see, i also applied to medical school during the masters. i believe it helped as i applied to five schools and was accepted to three. it can be done if you schedule your credits right and have an accomodating p.i. hope that helps.

Where did you do your masters at?

My pre-med advisor mentioned that perhaps I should apply to Podiatry, Dental, and Optometry school. I want to play on the Varsity. If I can't play on the Varsity then I'd rather not play at all. I think teeth are gross, feet are just plain nasty, and optics has always confused me in physics.
