Hey everyone,

Well I was talking to a freind of mine and she gave me some advice.
Now I dunno if itz true or not cuz itz too good to believe...

Anyways here goes:

I explained to her how I wanted to be in the lab doing research, but still I may end up changing my mind after my MPH, and might want to go to medical school.
Well she advised me to take the MCAT and to continue pursuing on the MPH. Also at the end of every year, the medical students have to take an exam in order to go on to the next year, so I should take the exams with them.
Once I finish my MPH, I should take the national board exam and apply for residency and go from there.

Now is it me, or I'm being a little skeptical here? 🙄

Well I'd appreciate any advice you could offer.
Thanx.

Yup hybrid, that would be a myth all right. You have to go through the same ballbusting process that everyone else goes through in order to get into medical school:

1) MCAT
2) Primary Application through AMCAS
3) Secondary Application through each individual school you've applied to (some schools screen, some don't)
4) Interview
5) Acceptance

A very tedious process indeed, but a necessary evil - no way around it. You can't take the USMLE (National Boards) exams if you're not a medical student. I wonder where your friend got her information from.

Also, the MPH has nothing to do with admission to medical school. It may only help (in most cases) or hinder the appeal of your application.

Best,
H&T

Thanx for the reply H&T,

By the way...Do you know any good sites that I search for positions in research even though I'm an undergrad? 🙂

Good question hybrid....

Mine to you is - what area of public health are you interested in? Are you looking for behavioral reasearch, or something more epidemiological/science-based in nature? You can start with looking at positions on the Public Health Employment Connection website: http://cfusion.sph.emory.edu/PHEC/phec.cfm. Most of what you'll see here are jobs, but they sometimes post internships. If anything, you can take a look at the different positions and use the website for contact information (esp. if you're interested at working at a particular agency).

Also, are you going to a school that has a public health institution affiliated with it, or will you be going to another school? If your answer is the former, I'd advise you to checl out postings in the SPH for positions that you might be eligible for. I did some work at the school of public health affiliated with my undergrad in my senior year through a sociology internship (which was easy with my interests in health behavior). I'm guessing that you can find similar opportunities if you're proactive or can use any connections that you may have to the school.

So what are your specific interests in public health?

Thanx for the site...Itz great...
