Yeah. I had the same thought. But he was a helo squadron flight surgeon. He'd deployed with them. They probably figured he wouldn't make that kind of mistake and weren't watching him like regular pax. Awful.

Unlikely that the helo was moving at all, right? How do you walk into the tail rotor, unless you meant to do it intentionally?

No reason to think it was intentional. This is a classic mishap. You can't see the rotor because of the rotation speed and its a wider path than people realize. That's why the crew chief is supposed to monitor where people go and anyone who works around helos knows to enter and exit from the forward facing 180(you'll see them always direct passengers in and out that way). Its sad and hard to understand because its helo safety 101.
