I was just accepted to the Navy HPSP. I am pumped and excited to start this adventure. I'm going to OIS in June. If you have been or know the answer, how much free time is available during OIS?

Ah yes, I remember the good ol' days of OIS, basking in the warm sunshine as I do my situps and pushups. OIS is 6 weeks of getting to know the Navy. Personally, I think it could have been cut down to 4 weeks so you have more of a summer. They also make you buy all these uniforms which is absolutely ridiculous. The cost is over a $1,000 dollars( which you pay 700.00 of it) and half of these uniforms you will never use. The good points about OIS is the networking. You meet people from all over the country and different schools that more than likely you will be doing residency with. Not to mention Newport is a pretty cool town. If you have any more questions about OIS feel free to ask.

I'm starting school this fall at KCOM and will be attending the June 18 OIS. BTW Liljoe2002, I was told by my contact at NSHS that OIS has now been condensed to 4 weeks. Yeah!

4 weeks? Are you serious? Do you have a name for your source at NSHS? I would love it if I didn't have to lose an extra two weeks of my summer.

OIS.... 4 weeks.... I DON'T THINK SO!!! Congratulations to those who got accepted to the HPSP.

I heard that they split up OIS into 2 summer sessions!! Can't believe it, it would have been nice to have that option available. I also heard that the summer after I did OIS they gave all the students Palm Pilots, which you guys should get. Recommendations: Bring your own fan(small protable one)
-pantyhose for buffing your shoes
-deck of cards for downtime
-laptop

I have heard for sure that OIS is 4 Weeks for the summer of 2001 from my RO & another 1st year HPSP student.. (I'll be attending)From June 18-July 13. I also heard that we have to be there the weekend before (the 15th or 16th)?? But, we'll have to make up the other 2 weeks some other time.

Can someone who has completed OIS detail the physical activities on a day to day basis? I would like to get to know the exact routine, so I can begin doing it beforehand.

How should we plan to bring the $1000 + in uniforms back with us? DO we need to bring an empty suitcase? It seems like a lot of stuff?

What airport do we fly in? Providence? Do we take a cab to the base or will they pick us up?

If there are certain things we should bring with us to OIS or other helpful hints
( things you wish you would have known beforehand )please feel free to inform everyone. Thanks..

(I am glad to see this topic getting some replies !! , since I started it.. COOL!!)

As far as the Navy goes, what is the probablility of matching with a competitive residency after the GMO tour?

I'm not a Navy doc, (pilot actually) but I have two flight sugreon friends who have matched in the last couple of years; one of them to his first choice derm, and the other (a DO, not that it matters but since you're going to KCOM) matched this year to ortho at Bethesda. Both of these guys were HPSP, did a one year transistional, then one tour as a flight surgeon. BTW both these guys were ****-hot front runners(IMHO), and that helps alot where the military match is concerned.

BTW, I did my undergrand at SIU C-dale, small world.

Hope this helps.

Liljoe2002 :
What did you hear about getting palm pilots at OIS? Where did you hear it from? Do you know anyone who has received one?

thanks
