I was just looking at this past yr's Navy Match List and I didn't see any Path residencies. Does the Navy offer them? It looks like Bethesda has some listed on their website for GME, but I can't seem to find anything where anyone's matched.

Pathology is a GME 2 selection, you would not find it on the intern list.
5 were selected last year 2-NNMC and 3-San Diego.

So, what do you do for your internship year? Do you take an internship in IM or something?

Also, if one were interested in doing Infectious Disease as a speciality, do you match into IM, and then specialize from there? Do you have to go through the entire IM residency, and then complete additional training?

10 applied/ 5 matched. Don't know if any went straight through, but a GMO would be more competitive.

Currently there is no internship year for pathology. Of course, if you don't match and do your internship+GMO tour you will be doing that internship.

Infectious Disease is a fellowship that is completed after a 3 year IM residency.

Hard to say year by year. The path residents I knew all did GMO tours but I gather that at least one of last years group were straight through.

The Navy (unlike the AF and Army) still requires an intern year before matching to pathology. This year 2 navy interns at NNMC got picked up to go straight through, one at NNMC one at San Diego. The other incoming resident to NNMC is a Navy GMO who is in Iraq now. I don't know about the other positions at San Diego. So at NNMC:
    2004- one intern, one GMO
2005- one intern, one GMO (and I know that San Diego took one intern from NNMC)
    2006- two interns
    2007- one intern, one GMO

    (I'm a WRAMC/NNMC path resident -Army)
