wusup everyone, i just joined this site it looks really helpful i got a few quesitons if anyone can answer any of them it would be a great help...

1. i'm gonna take ndb 1 in december for prep i'm memorizing all the dental deck cards, and all the past exams...will this be enough to get a good score on the exam...because when i pick up my texts i just have no idea where to start these decks seem very good at covering just about everything, and not just memorizing the question on the card but understanding everything that the answer has related to it.....so is that good enuogh what do you guys think.

2. also i'm gonna apply for advanced standing, i was born and raised in New york and then i came to pakistan to do my b.d.s. dental degree.. so when applying to advanced standing will my US nationality help wiht my admission chances...do they give preference to US citizes who studied abroad.

3. last thing, i really wanna go to boston university, does anyone attend their dental thing right now and if so realistically what kinda ndb board scores do i need to get in, my toufel scores are through the roof so that's not a problem almost a perfect score but what do i need on the boards...

4. actually one more thing i forgot...in our grading system in pakistan it's a pass fail system with 50 percent being passing now on our final exams very very few people score above a 75 percent in fact if you do it' s considered a distinction and you get an award...but if i get that converted into US scale of grading it only comes out to a 'C' grade right or a 2.0. does the ECE compensate for this when they do the conversion..anyone that has applied from pakistan or india would know about this or anyone else that could help me out it would be great sorry for sucha long post just got a lotta question,

take care

I can answer your first two questions:

1. Memorizing just the Dental Decks will insure you to pass the Part 1 (getting a 75 average). Will it get you a great score of a 90+ which you'll need because you're an Advance Standing applicant? No. You'll need to go above and beyond on your studies if you want to earn a 90+ average. You'll need more than just memorizing the Dental Decks.

2. Being a U.S. citizen will not help your chances in an Advance Standing application. The matter of fact is you obtained a foreign Bachelor's degree, you'll be treated and looked at just as any other foreign applicants. Studying aboard actually hurt your chances because now you'll have to go through Advance Standing application process which is extremely competitive for those few available spots of those dental schools that offers them.

Good luck on your studies.

If your given the chance to apply to year 1 I would also do that.
I only studied decks and old tests and got 92 on part 1. It really depends on your background knowledge of the basic sciences. Some questions I answered were from stuff I learned in undergrad and not dental school at all.

I don't think studying abroad would hurt your chances of getting a US dental degree, if you can still apply year 1. Its only an extra year.

I studied in the US and applied to advanced standing in Canada, although I was not accepted I had the chance to repeat year 1 but I did not want to do that.

Being a US citizen will only benefit you in your ability to get loans without the need of a us cosigner.

With respect to your grades I thought foreign transcripts had to be sent to some agency to get translated.

I know someone who got admission in Boston ( Pakistani dental graduate) . Her score in part1 was 89 %,she had studied not just the dental decks but the text books too.
Keep in mind that this was two years ago, the score requirement must have changed now.

Yes, some of the advanced standing programs do prefer you if you are a US citizen, so that's a plus point for you.

Best of Luck

dont worry about the grading system back there in pakistan.. just send ECE yr 4 yrs mark sheets along with the req docs for GENERAL evaluation..n they 'll send u a letter ceritifying yr 4 yrs of study in BDS prog.. they dont really care about grades..trust me!

ermia...thanx for the help but what about when the time comes to apply to advanced standing don't the colleges look at your gpa then after it is evaluated from the ece that is what i'm more worried about...can u clear this up for me..and...i'm graduating two and a half months i have already sent me first 3 years marks to the ece to get done so tha ti can take the ndb1 i dont have to have graduated to take the ndb1 right just i just have to have completed the required courses that is correct isnt it😕

i am also in final year of BDS from pakistan i.e. from de'Montmorency college of densitry, lahore. seems like we both r getting our course done in a couple of months.
well so far u did the right thing.. for nbd1 general ECE report is required..
later on most of the US dental schools require course-by course evaluation of your dental degree which u can do after you graduate.
