what are some things you find indispensable when you're working? a friend of mine is in her first year as an anesthesiology resident, and i want to give her something that will really serve her well, or something she'll use or wear every day. it doesn't need to be doctor-themed or specific to anesthesiology... it could be something commonplace like a bandana or a notepad, or something fun and quirky that you've seen and loved.

thanks!

big crossword or sudoku for those long OR hours.... 😀

You wearing one of those now, Mr. Songman? That peds fellowship has gone to your head. Next thing will be a fannypack...

I started to post a fannypack pic but I remembered that you started a very long thread about them. I think it was titled "Is the Fannypack Really That Bad?". Takes one to know one.

Well, at least I asked the group before I purchased one. I got my answer from the masses and chose wisely. I suggest you start a "is the calculator watch that bad?" thread before committing to this toolish gadget.

Ha ha. I guess this shows the limits of sarcasm on a written forum although apparently your fanny packt thread was serious. 😛

My phone has a calculator should I need one.

"Sarcasm," what's that? The point I was originally making was that I don't want to see you turning into some peds attendings that we both know. Obviously, I was being totally serious. 😉

 Yeah, she sports a nice fanny pack but not a slick calculator watch. She probably has plenty of room for a calculator in the fanny pack so a calculator watch would be unnecessary. ?

I wear a fanny pack. Proudly.

Now I will get a Casio calculator watch as well.

Guess what? I still get laid. By women. A lot.

WTF, 20+ posts into a "gift for anesthesiologist" thread on SDN and I'm the first to post a firearm?

Hospital bylaws may prohibit carry at work, however.

i think....for the most part....it is waived for the doctors.

If only. Sadly CCW is verboten both at my Navy day job (no surprise there) and my civvie weekend job. Currently engaged in debate with the local PD in this may-issue state about why they should bother to issue a permit to me if neither of my employers allow CCW. Not that I'd carry in the hospital anyway.

the deep south is pretty liberal....as far as ccw is concerned

when are you getting out?

Warm weather, too. I may have difficulty convincing the wife to move east of the Rockies, although she did like NC, which is sorta kinda southernish.

when are you getting out?

2014 is when I'll be allowed to make that decision.

F that, you need to move here to VT. It's the establishments legal burden to post a sign forbidding weapons on premises. Unfortunately my hospital has a sign. BTW - I thinks its considered rude to give an empty quadrail as a gift!

Skip the AR and go for the MR1.

ahh...crap.

🙂 So far I'm pretty happy, though that might just be the post-residency high.

I'm at a small command and while the caseload is trivial, I can moonlight a bit and hold off the skill rot. It also helps with the pay differential. Cost of living is reasonable out here in the sticks. Kids are in good schools. Family's happy. No imminent deployments. It's a good life.

The Benelli MR1? They look nice but I've never fired one. There's a M4 shotgun on my shopping list (one of the few items that's CA legal) but nothing else in 5.56 at the moment.

I think the can on the AR10 makes up for the empty rails. 🙂

Niether have I, and I sure won't be owning one anytime soon. Several of my buddies have AR's and I've put lots of rounds through them. As much fun as they are, I think I'd rather own a Garand with all the original goodies. Better yet, I'll take both😀

The supressor on that thing makes it look huge!!

every machine has a scope hanging on it, so I stopped carrying one

Not the case in my hospital. Quite a few times I am the only one in the OR with a stethoscope. Even some residents or CRNA's don't carry them. Seems surprising to me. I also like having a stethoscope on me for codes and traumas.

I still think this is an awesome gift. (I guess I do not have champagne taste).

I can back you up on this as a great gift. It's because of something you posted that I bought a Fenix that I use daily!

I still love Fahrenheit but I wouldn't say no for Allure, Davidoff or Azzaro chrome.
Just ignore the rule - "no perfumes in the hospital".
They are really worth to keep your dignity up. And not only.
2win

You're welcome, if you're bold you can add this to the break room:

xpole-in-action.jpg

The freaking administration doesn't pay for the pole...
And they are willing to pay for the "artist" but they say "no discrimination based on color, gender and so on"....
I will not take any risk!!!!
And I was thinking only to BMI! And of course - I had my concerns for the pole.

I have a Big Green Egg. It's great! Best steak, burgers, chicken you ever had. I've done fish a couple of times which was good. I've made brisket too but it takes 12 hours and I need to practice on that one. Gas just can't compare to real hardwood charcoal flavor, and the egg lets you always cook it to your taste without burning the edges. Once the edge/skin is perfect you can just shut down the fire and let it smoke until it's as 'done' as you like it.
It's a pretty expensive gift, but if you are going to spend $500-800, it's a great choice. Nice recommendation.
