I am doing a medical spanish/clinic trip to guatemala and am wondering if anyone has been there and if they might have suggestions for a small medical text that I can bring with.

Any advice or interesting stories about Guatemala would also be appreciated.

One of our residents recently returned from there on an international health scholarship. I'll see what text he used. He left without knowing Spanish, and returned speaking it fluently.

When I did a short term medical mission in Honduras, the 5-Minute Medical Consult on PDA came in handy.

Sorry, for some reason I thought you were talking about a Spanish text.

If you have a Palm or Pocket PC, I highly recommend PEPID EM. www.pepid.com Not really a text, but much better in my opinion. You can also get the Emergency Medicine clerkship pocket book from Tarascon.

Any standard text on third world medicine will suffice. Where you headed? I came back from a rural mayan village a few months ago.

I am going to the Pop-wuj clinic in Xela. Fourth year is great! Any advice on the third world medicine text...I can't say that I know of any.

I went to Pop-Wuj after my first year in medical school. It was hands down the best trip I have ever taken. There are tons of Spanish schools in the country and Xela, but this is definitely one of the best ones and very affordable. Have an awesome time....there is this small store across the school that sells homemade frozen chocobananes....mmmm. The country is so easily traveled and relatively safe for singles or female travelers if you use common sense.

sigh...such good memories. :) Enjoy your year!
