Hi all,
I have a seemingly big problem. I just finished my first year at an FM residency last July, which was more like an IM residency (heavy inpatient). I discovered that I really would like to switch residencies to FM or even Psych last Feb. (due a newly-found interest and because I connected well with psychiatry patients in the outpatient clinic). Since, I decided late, I did not apply for the 2011 Match last year to transfer.
The problem is that I only received credit for 4-5 months during the residency due to personal issues. However, my program director is VERY supportive of my decision and has written a good LOR for me and I have 3 other strong LORs from attendings. The problem is that I'll apply through ERAS this fall, but I have to start as a PGY-1 in either specialty and I have already used up GME funding for my first year in FM. I don't know what to do because most programs are advising me to start as a PGY-2, but obviously can't.
I've heard that GME funding is not always a big problem at because they can absorb the cost, but I'm not sure.
I really need advice. Thank you so much!
