I'm am currently entering my junior year of high school under a PSEO program at the community college. I attended the same program last year and to date i have 36 credit hours that are fully transferable to a 1 to 1 ratio. At my current rate I will graduate College in one year, and then apply to medical school. My current GPA is a 3.3 but ill surly graduate with at least a 3.5 gpa. My question is will a medical school accept a 19 yr. old? I've already gotten 20 hours of shadowing at the local hospital and i am going to volunteer this October, but i cant shake the feeling they want more. If you do not think ill be accepted at my age what should i do? PA program, Masters or research? I want to be a doctor so bad and i am starting to feel my guning at an early age will kill my chances at med school after college:(.
Please any suggestions or advice would be splendid.

Tony

You know not all people named Tony are Italian, right? And you know talking like that to someone who IS Italian is incredibly offensive, right?

You may want to google "interpersonal skills" before your first interview in a few years. Also, age can be a factor. If someone is, say, 18 or 19, some adcoms may question maturity/purpose prior to an interview.

here ya go buddy.....take it easy. and thats just one school. I'm too lazy to search for others

The UWSOM does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, or disability. Applicants have been as old as 49 and as young as 15.

I never said they discriminate. I said that age factors in. They also don't discriminate based on sexuality, but do you think it would affect an interview if a man walked in wearing a skirt? It shouldn't, but you also can't deny human nature, especially of older, conservative interviewers. Same goes for age. If an older doctor is interviewing an 18-year old and a 24-year old back to back, they are more likely to see the 24-year old as mroe mature, I would imagine.

the only reason they would see the 24-year old as more mature is if he or she she actually is. Its very possible for a 15-16 year old to be more mature than 20-something year old. maybe try shooting for a more active imagination???

I'm sure there probably are some 15-16-year olds who are more mature than some 24-year olds. If you've taken any courses in logic or scientific method, though, you would know that exceptions don't disprove the rule.

you had to take a class to learn that??? with that said I think I'll bow out...I learned (without having to take a class, thank gawd!!) that internet arguments never end

I personally could careless about the italian stereotype. As for the age thing, i am trying to compensate for time by shadowing and volunteering, your thoughts? My parents want me to do a PA program for 26 months then apply but i think i've got a good shot straight out of college.

Ehhhhhh...I'm about as Italian as they come. Not only did I instantly get the joke, but I chuckled a little. I guess I can see why some would be offended...sort of.

OP, I doubt you'll graduate college in 1 year. Every school that I'm familiar with - which isn't many, granted, but they're all major universities - requires some sort of hour load to graduate. You may have all the classes you need for your degree, but you're probably going to have to take another ~60 hours of random junk to get your credit hours over the threshold. Med schools would accept a 19-year-old applicant as long as he could demonstrate maturity, but I don't think that's going to be an issue for you.

I was pointing out that you were using an exception to disprove the rule, something you apparently never learned, in class or otherwise.

Good plan.

Im pretty italian my self and i thought it was funny in a over-the-top-Mario kind of way.

you sound like you know what you want to do and are preparing for it, work hard:thumbup:

OP, they do want more. There is more involved than completing the required coursework and obtaining a degree, and squeezing in volunteer and shadowing hours. You will be competing with people who have have 3 or more years of not just time in college classes, but life experiences and contributions. Of all the puzzle pieces that go together to create a solid application, those can be the most difficult to acquire for those who complete their college educations at a highly accelerated rate.

Maturity does factor in, but that's only part of it.

I'm actually from Italy, and I didn't get it :D but it might be an Italian-American thing.

Oh, and OP, you should look at mdapps. I believe age is one of the criteria you can pick. You can see how the young'uns did there.

it is for me at least. whenever I watch these dang gangster movies it makes me start talking like that. Kinda like ray liottas opening line in goodfellas "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster"

hopes and wishes......

Don't rush. Do a master's degree or a doctorate, become engaged in a full-time service program such asTeach for America, Peace Corps, get a job & work f/t for 2 years... it would make you a more interesting applicant and put you ahead of other applicants while still being a year younger than the majority of applicants.

Another thing... with your gpa from community college being between 3.3 and 3.5 you are going to need to do very well at a top college AND do very well on the MCAT and perhaps in graduate classes to assure the adcom that you have what it takes academically.

Go ahead and apply. There's no harm in trying. Contrary to what many may tell you on Internet forums, applying to medical school is not the worst thing in the world. Don't listen to people that tell you why you can't (including parents and Internet gurus) listen to your heart. Be bold, schools are looking for applicants who will be successful and that includes having guts. There is no magic formula.

Ha ha, greasy guido.

I was also wondering about how the application process will work for me if i chose to apply after my Bachelors Degree. Will my voulnteering and research hours count in the app and what other problems could i face?

Everything after high school is fair game, so yes, your hours will still count. If you're been lazy since graduating, that might be an issue, but as long as you've been doing something (working, traveling, volunteering, whatever), that shouldn't be a problem.

As stated in the original post, im still in High school technically but i take all my classes at the local CC.

yeah........ Any other problems you think ill run into?

Just curious... why would you want to miss out on your college years and rush right into Med School, which, from what I hear, is way less fun that undergrad. I look at my undergrad years as the best of my life. I had entirely way too much fun and got to experience a lot of different things. What about studying abroad, getting really involved in an organization, having fun just goofing around with roommates, staying out all night, all the friendships you will make, etc, etc?

Well.... due to my parents financial situation, i am trying to take years off of tuition for me and them (they will only pay for one year).

Any other problems i might face?
When is a good time to take the MCAT?

Lol pay for college yourself with loans. Its easy. And you won't be missing out on hot psych major chicks, awesome friends, and various other crap.
