I have an opportunity to get academic credit and a grade for helping with research at my school. This is the only research experience I will have and my ECs aren't that great.
I don't need the credit but the grade could raise my gpa a little. Does it take away from the value of research if I have it as a class on the transcript? Thanks for any input.

No. It doesn't hurt you. Take the grade boost and pad your GPA.

I think it's still valid - I did an honors these in my major that took me a year to complete - I definitely still put it on my resume as something additional to the usual school stuff that I had accomplished. If you learn something and have something to say about what you did, it's even better.

Good luck!!

I would totally go for it. Research is research, and it sounds to me like you're getting a good deal: the opportunity to add research experience to your CV AND a gpa boost! Congrats, I wish I could have done that! (But then again, I did get paid, hehe...)
